Hawaiian Native newspapers

[edit]

Info on Hawaiian Native newspapers[1] may help with improvements. Netherzone (talk) 03:23, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be that person, but Hawaii isn't part of North America. Yuchitown (talk) 04:09, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oops! You are right, I'll remove the link I added to the article. Netherzone (talk) 04:24, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Awards

[edit]

It would be great if research could be done to see which of these newspapers have won journalism awards. Netherzone (talk) 03:32, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Many have won the National Native Media Awards, now the Indigenous Media Awards. Yuchitown (talk) 04:12, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Online news listings

[edit]

Found the mother lode! OSU's Native American Tribal Resources and Newspapers: Online U.S. Tribal Newsletters and Newspapers. Now we can have a secondary source. I just added the As and can add a letter's worth of entries at time. Others welcome to add, as well! Yuchitown (talk) 15:59, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Yuchitown, as of this morning the M section from OSU is done. I am wondering if the article should be called List of Indigenous newspapers and newsletters in North America rather than List of Indigenous newspapers in North America. The reason for this thought is that some of these publications are monthly newsletters rather than daily or weeklies. They are still a reliable source of information about the specific tribe, so it makes sense to include the newsletters. What do you think? Netherzone (talk) 15:03, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Or should it be broadened to include other media? Like Cheyenne & Arapaho TV? List of Indigenous news media in North America? Yuchitown (talk) 15:22, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've been wondering about that too. My original thought was to create a separate article for Indigenous magazines; and a separate article for Indigenous media (TV, radio and podcasts) and then linking them together under a "See also" section, or via a note at the top of the article "For Indigenous XYZ see List of Indigenous XYZ. I hadn't figured out how to format all of the various types of news media/sources in one single list article. Netherzone (talk) 15:35, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Then the trend is toward media companies with multiple platforms: radio, podcasts, web news, etc. Maybe just list format after tribe or after location? I find tables so difficult to format and update, so don't advocate that route. Yuchitown (talk) 15:38, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My thought was to more or less follow the existing category structures and also use List of Indigenous periodicals in Canada as a model. See commentary on [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countering systemic bias#How to improve Wikipedia for Indigenous editors of the Americas?:
Category:First Nations newspapers, Category:First Nations magazines, Category:Native American magazines, Category:Native American newspapers, Category:Defunct Native American newspapers, Category:First Nations mass media, Category:Indigenous mass media in Canada, Category:Indigenous mass media, Category: Native American radio, Category:Navajo mass media, etc.
And then move on to create List of Indigenous magazines and academic journals in North America, and then a List of Indigenous media in North America for TV, radio and podcasts.
I thought the list would get too unwieldy and difficult to maintain if everything was lumped in one List, and as you mention, there is the very confusing table formatting problem, yikes! I hear you though that big media companies do it all, however since many of these publications are from the Tribes/Nations themselves that may not have their own media company, it made sense to separate the various types of media. But I'm old skool, LOL! Netherzone (talk) 16:18, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. And thank you for taking this initiative! Yuchitown (talk) 14:46, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for being such a great collaborator! Netherzone (talk) 15:18, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
