David Williams (mathematician)

Would David Williams (mathematician) be suitable for inclusion here? --Diagonal P. (talk) 19:29, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Yes, add away, the more the merrier. When I get a chance, I'll look through my JC stuff to see if I can find dates for him as well. BencherliteTalk 10:04, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Added more degrees, FRS, year DPhil published (presumed same as graduation year) and refs. Casper Gutman (talkcontributions) 09:26, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Added matric date and ref. I took the liberty of removing the mention of the MA, on the basis that MAs hardly need noting now that no work is required for one! BencherliteTalk 00:17, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Names to add

Looking at Category:Alumni of Jesus College, Oxford, there are still some names to add, which I'll list here so others can join in: [listed above, more added since, reformatted for ease of use]. BencherliteTalk 00:08, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

At the time of writing, all the names in Category:Fellows of Jesus College, Oxford are included. BencherliteTalk 01:07, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

I added Fairgrieve with the other geographers, but then felt sure I should have put him with the educators. Does anyone have more of a feeling than I as to what his most notable contributions were? Casper Gutman (talkcontributions) 08:56, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
That was quick! Either would work, but I think he's happier with the other geographers. Educators seems to be mainly for those who were primarily teachers rather than those who contributed to their subject. BencherliteTalk 09:31, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Other names to add when articles are written

Feel free to add to the list. BencherliteTalk 00:30, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

All now written. BencherliteTalk 17:53, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Further update: I have added some more names to the list this evening (a couple of new short articles I wrote, finding some articles written by others) - and I'm going to work slowly through the list of names at User:Bencherlite/Biographies to add for Jesus College, Oxford, which I based on the lists drawn up by User:Magnus Manske/Dictionary of National Biography. Some, though not all, are in Welsh Biography Online (free access) or the Oxford DNB (subscription/library access). Pick any you want!
I have also boldly rejigged the layout of the names into more sections, to make internal navigation easier. Any thoughts? BencherliteTalk 23:29, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Emilia Fox?

Carole Cadwalladr, in the Observer newspaper of 16 March 2008 [1], says that, amongst others, Geoff Hoon and Emilia Fox attended Jesus College, Oxford. The reference to Geoff Hoon is wrong - he attended Jesus College, Cambridge [2]. In relation to Emilia Fox, there are many sources to say she attended Oxford University , but none which name the college. Can this potential link be corroborated? D22 (talk) 00:20, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

She's not mentioned in any of the college publications I've got, nor on the college website (save for taking part in a performance of a Sylvia Plath play organised by a JC lecturer, which may be the source of the confusion). I think that it's likely that she would have been mentioned if she had attended. This source suggests St Catz, which (sadly) seems more likely! (<OR> Given her age, we would have overlapped if she was there, and I think I might have noticed her(!) </OR>) BencherliteTalk 00:40, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Time to split into sub-lists?

With 400 names and 458 references, this list is now #27 at Special:Longpages and is getting slower to load. Should one or more sub-lists be created? If so, what names should be split off, and under what titles? Having looked at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (long lists), which doesn't My thoughts were for one or more of the following to be split off:

  1. List of alumni of Jesus College, Oxford: Politics and law - for politicians, lawyers, and judges
  2. List of alumni of Jesus College, Oxford: Religion - for bishops and clergy of all denominations
  3. List of alumni of Jesus College, Oxford: Academia and education - for university academics and other educators
3.1: However, for example, not all the "historians" listed had university appointments and it would seem sensible to keep them together, so perhaps List of alumni of Jesus College, Oxford: Arts, humanities and sciences would be better, to cover celticists, classicists and archeologists, geographers and cartographers, historians, language and literature academics, mathematicians, philosophers and theologians, and scientists and physicians
  4. List of alumni of Jesus College, Oxford: Creative arts and entertainment - artists, writers, actors, poets, broadcasters and other entertainers

I'd be tempted to leave the civil servants/diplomats, military, sports, "other people in public life" and fictional people on the main list; if option 3.1 is taken, then educators and maybe "other academics" would stay too. Thoughts? BencherliteTalk 07:04, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Agreed it's getting too long to load. No preference on how to split. D22 (talk) 09:05, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
First sub-list is List of alumni of Jesus College, Oxford: Law and government, including (after further thought) civil servants as they seemed to fit in nicely with the politicians. BencherliteTalk 17:56, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Another fictional sudent?

The principal character of William Boyd's Restless is Ruth Gilmartin. In Chapter 4 she calls at her college in Turl Street. Given that the novel is firmly set in 1976, and that Jesus would have been the only college in Turl Street at that time to admit women, this would suggest she is at Jesus College (albeit that it is said to have a Middle Common Room, not a Graduate Common Room as Jesus had at the time). Boyd himself has said here that he places his Oxford characters at Jesus College. Is this sufficient to justify inclusion of Ruth Gilmartin as the first female fictional student on this list? D22 (talk) 09:05, 16 November 2008

Sounds convincing enough to me. Do you want to do the honours? BencherliteTalk 09:14, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of alumni of Jesus College, Oxford's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Was":

  • From Alfred Wood: "Wood, Professor Alfred Cecil". Who Was Who. Oxford University Press. 2007. Retrieved 7 March 2009. {{cite web}}: Unknown parameter |month= ignored (help)

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 00:03, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Fixed. Bencherheavy (talk) 15:27, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Broken table row

The row about Thomas Richards (cleric) and 2 surrounding rows seem to be broken, but I don't have time to fix them just now. Maybe someone knowledgeable about this article could restore or fix the original content please. GermanJoe (talk) 06:50, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
