Merge

[edit]

Lists Overlapping!!!! There are numerous lists which overlap but which do necessarily contain relevant data from each other

E.g.

Lists of Castles in the ROI, Lists of Castles in Ireland, List of historic abbeys, monuments & castles in Ireland, List of Historic Houses in Ireland, Category: Castles in Kerry,... X 32

The historic abbeys, monuments & castles list had Bunratty filed as a monument & only contained three castles for the whole of Ireland!

Too many cooks??

Vote FOR merge. Rationale: better more accurate maintenance of information on a single list WP article rather than two; these lists aren't getting much editor attention. Also, any distinction between the two lists could be made within a single reorganized list article. N2e 16:08, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest we refer this to User:BrownHairedGirl who is pretty expert in the area of categorisation. (Sarah777 00:41, 16 November 2007 (UTC))[reply]
Thanks for the note on my talk, Sarah. You flatter me: I think I'm more of an obsessive than an expert, but since an "ex" is a has-been and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure, maybe that's me after all ... :)
As to categorisation, it looked pretty good, but I have added Category:Ireland-related lists.
On merger, I think I'd suggest a third option: transclusion: make this article a shell which transcludes the Republic list and the NI list. Hey presto, we have an all-Ireland article for those who want that, and separate lists for both sides of the border for those who want them ... but no duplicate documents to maintain. If none of you have done this before, drop me a note and I can show how it's done. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:57, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Without fear of contradiction I can say I have never knowingly transcluded! (Sarah777 01:35, 16 November 2007 (UTC))[reply]
OK, it's now done. For help on this sort of thing, see Wikipedia:Transclusion. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:54, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photos of Castle Kirk

[edit]

I have a batch of pretty decent photos taken in 2003 of Castlekirke, a small island castle in upper Lough Corrib. Castle Kirk is on the List of castles in Ireland list, but has no article. I don't know the first thing about writing a castle article in the correct format, nor uploading photos with the correct naming conventions, license, etc., but would be glad to provide photos to others. I also have photos of two pages of text describing the description and history of Caislean Kirk, very readable, that would provide a good basis for a stub on the castle. If anyone is interested, write me on my Talk page. N2e 03:31, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Great Merge of 9/5/2016

[edit]

So I perhaps went a little overboard and spent about an hour merging the two list pages for Ireland at last. While transclusion of the two is an interesting idea, I believe it is much simpler now just to use the Table of Contents box to travel over borders.

Feel free to have a discussion with me here or on my User talk:Vami_IV. Vami IV (talk) 06:55, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Deus Vult![reply]

List standards

[edit]

Target standards for Wikipedia Lists:

  • 1. Prose; overall, features professional standards of writing.
  • 2. Lede; has an engaging lede, of appropriate length (not trying to be an article) that introduces the subject, and defines the scope, and inclusion criteria.
  • 3. Comprehensiveness: comprehensively covers the defined scope, providing where practical a complete set of items, but at least all of the major items. Where appropriate, has annotations that provide useful and appropriate information, of appropriate length, and taking account of any separate articles which might exist or be reasonably likely to exist given notability requirements, about selected items.
  • 4. Structure; is easy to navigate and includes, where helpful, section headings and table sort facilities.
  • 5. Style. It complies with the Manual of Style, including making suitable use of text layout, formatting, tables, and color, and with a minimal proportion of redlinked items, and has images and other media, if appropriate to the topic, that follow Wikipedia's usage policies, with succinct captions (and non-free images and other media satisfy the criteria for the inclusion of non-free content and are labeled accordingly). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.96.68.130 (talk) 10:29, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
