Almost every environmental protest now has broken a previous record. The "Forward on Climate" march in DC 2013 was the coldest (-5 IIRC) and the largest environmental protest at the time. And the "people's climate march" in NYC 2014 was the largest in history. Measure like that can be misleading. Earth day was pretty big in 1970. Also it's not only about the number, but about the influence on effective changes. Also, if you want to compare number, you have to check for percentage of total population going to the protest, otherwise you have a bias for population growth for example.
