1976 Venice fire:
It's a google-truck shot of Venice at Canfield. The In-n-Out burger wasn't there. And there was a wide dividing strip in the middle of Venice Bvld. A bulldozer was working as they were digging a trench. He accidentally hit a main Standard Oil pipeline, and the explosion and intensity of the initial flash suggested an atom bomb had been dropped. It made the national news because the column of fire was so contained, and so tall, that you could see the flame itself for miles. And it burnt for hours. The neighborhood fell into an uncomfortable lockdown, and certain neighbors took up firearms and protected 'their' area by waving them around, a bit too much as far as I was concerned. They were eventually 'relieved' of their 'posts', but not for about two days.
NTSB report on the incident:
Title: Standard Oil Company of California, Pipeline Rupture, Los Angeles, California, June 16, 1976. NTSB Report Number: PAR-76-08, adopted on 12/9/1976 NTIS Report Number: PB-264347/AS
At 10.32 am on 16 June 1976, and 8 inch pipeline owned by Standard Oil Co was struck and ruptured by excavation equipment working on a road widening scheme. Gasoline sprayed from the rupture and sprayed nearby buildings 90 seconds later the gasoline ignited, and the fire killed 9 persons, injured 14 and caused extensive property damage.
Road widening of Venice Boulevard had been in progress for 9 months and was 41% complete. The wide central area between the two lanes was being excavated so that it could be filled and paved for traffic.
The bucket of the front loader punctured a hole 2.5 by 5 inches and gasoline at 550 psig (38 barg) sprayed up and over the sidewalk and into several buildings. The rapidly vaporizing gasoline created a fog-like atmosphere in the area. When it ignited the flaes engulfed the entire block. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.24.162.157 (talk) 14:22, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- The news photos of the SoCal accident showed it being really bad.--Pipeexaminer (talk) 14:04, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
Irrelevant and Incomplete Info
[edit]Why is there a UK section if there have been no relevant UK incidents? Conversely, why isn't there a section for every country in the world if irrelevancy doesn't matter? Regarding the recent San Bruno explosion, the information here is presented as if it were complete, which is obviously inaccurate and misleading. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.118.229.114 (talk) 06:18, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
