UK Tour?

[edit]

Not to muddle things up, but the Channel Islands and the Republic of Ireland are NOT part of the UK. Yet, Jersey, Guernsey, and Dublin are all listed under the headers of "UK Tour." 98.221.120.104 (talk) 05:53, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that could cause some controversy. It should be renamed to British Isles tour. McLerristarr | Mclay1 05:25, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Format of the list

[edit]

I have intially decided to use the following format for the chronological list:

Year

[edit]

Month

  • Day and date eg Monday 15th - Venue (additional notes)

Any issues with this or suggestions for change, lets discuss it here and improve it together. Liverpool Scouse 20:55, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Mammoth Task!

[edit]

I've started very early (1961) - so that leaves hundreds of local gigs etc to include? Or perhaps we should not have such a far-reaching scope for this artcile and only include major concerts? What gets classed as a "major" concert then? Come on, it's a new article, lets discuss it and reach improvement by concensus. Liverpool Scouse 20:55, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article development paused

[edit]

As I'm mainly using information from Lewisohn to populate this list, I've stopped adding dates whilst I explore possible copyright issues. Liverpool Scouse 19:01, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What's the decision on this? I'd love to see the 1962 dates. Rneglia (talk) 04:11, 27 August 2009 (UTC)RN[reply]

Is this too much out of context detail?

[edit]

I think it's certainly appropriate that we may have deeper coverage of the Beatles than many bands- being perhaps the most talked-about band of all time. But this seems like just a list of facts with no hope of being an encyclopedia article. Unless there's some way for this article to evolve that I'm not seeing, I'd suggest merging whatever is relevant into existing articles. I don't see the encyclopedic purpose to a list of gig dates. Friday (talk) 17:31, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • That's what I was beginning to think myself to be honest, whilst there may be some use in an (oft-suggested) "Beatles tours" article, which can include relevant information, after starting this article it now seems to be a rather pointless task within the context of an encyclopaedia....and far too painstaking for my fingers besides! Liverpool Scouse 18:10, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • I think one article per tour (and pre-tour days, maybe one per year). Each article could start off as little more than the show dates but really if we dig deep enough there's plenty of material out there to make encyclopedic articles: anecdotes, reviews, instruments used, attendance figures etc etc. I don't see a problem at all and no way (imho) would this or the articles I propose get deleted at AFD.
    • This is fine for copyright. It's a list of facts and my understanding is that US copyright law doesn't apply to list of facts. Please put the source into the article though, all articles ought to be referenced. --kingboyk 13:23, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A pure list like this is pretty unilluminating. An article per tour, as suggested above, seems right; see Category:Concert tours for plenty of examples. The best ones don't just list dates or setlists, but rather seek to explain what was different or powerful or influential or something about a particular tour. Examples include The Rolling Stones American Tour 1972, Darkness Tour, War Tour (or any of the U2 tour articles), Blond Ambition Tour, you can get the idea. I definitely think Beatles tours merit articles, if for no other reason that to show how different they were from modern tours. Wasted Time R 03:57, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hamburg

[edit]

Where are the Hamburg Shows and the ones they played in 1962? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.181.58.124 (talk) 16:14, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

the Hamburg residency is historically significant, and should be included. for more info see The Beatles in Hamburg riffic (talk) 15:26, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Source for the tour dates

[edit]

Very good source for the Beatles tour dates is "The Beatles Diary" by Barry Miles (ISBN-10:1572151145; ISBN-13:978-1572151147) - it provides day-to-day coverage for their entire career.--FreedonNadd (talk) 19:07, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy Nicol (etc.)

[edit]

According to the Jimmy Nicol article, Nicol took Starr's place not just for the show June 4, but all shows until the 14th when Starr returned... Whichever is inaccurate (this article or that one) should be fixed... TheHYPO (talk) 21:20, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That is year 1964 for Jimmy Nicol's filling in for Ringo Starr as noted just above the sentence you are reading.

Also, the table is not quite complete regarding Pete Best. Just under reference to 1961 is a note that all performances had Pete Best. That would also be true for 1962 until Ringo started performing with the group. But I just noticed this in the Pete Best article:

"Hutchison filled in as drummer at short notice when Best didn't turn up on the evening of his dismissal, and played a further two bookings until Starr joined the group."

Article title

[edit]

Somebody took the liberty of moving the page to The Beatles Concerts with the reason "coherence !". I've moved it back as this needs to be discussed before it's done. I don't think it should be moved for several reasons. Firstly, "The Beatles Concerts" is grammatically incorrect – it should be "The Beatles' concerts". Secondly, it's not just about their concerts, it's about all their live performances. You couldn't call a small gig in the Cavern Club a concert, for example. Also, it's not an article discussing their performances, it's a list. So "List of The Beatles' live performances" is the best title. There is no reason to give it a different title just because it's shorter. McLerristarr (Mclay1) (talk) 12:16, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The same person has moved it back, without discussion. I agree with you that List of The Beatles' live performances is a superior title to The Beatles Concerts. Wasted Time R (talk) 03:05, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
another agree, keep the original name. consistency with project is key riffic (talk) 05:27, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lydney Town Hall

[edit]

I have received two reports that the Fab four gave a concert at Lydney Town Hall in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire on the evening of August the 31st 1962. I have no personal knowledge of the event but the local Town Hall claims the event in its hisotric events section. Also the event has been recalled by a living person who was at the event too. This seems a bit strange because there is no mention in your list, and will need to be verified. I am attempting to clear this mystery up as well. We could ask Ringo of course, as he may remember it because it would have been his second or third gig with the Beatles.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.9.143.147 (talkcontribs) 11:00, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Beatles tour Australia

I believe the Beatles toured Australia and several other countries during December 1964. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.192.21.88 (talk) 14:42, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to Wikipedia, they toured Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. 213.246.126.152 (talk) 18:19, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mostly "towns" - Second column label should be "Town/City"

[edit]

I like this layout and content overall, but it does jar on me (an old man from Wales) to see that all those towns in the list (from Morecambe to Margate, and the majority of venues between) have been promoted to city status in this article, without so much as a decree of Royal Charter from Her Majesty, a pretty nice girl. This is somewhat of a big deal in Britain (much sought after). Such promotions do not happen very often at all (just 36 changes in England, 5 in Wales since 1158, for 51 and 6 cities today). I am "bilingual" having lived the second 28 years of my life in California, so I am NOT asking to switch from American English to British English usage, but rather for a simple accommodation of both. I suggest changing the second column's header text from "City" to "Town/City". There is normally an official distinction in the USA too, but because the distinction varies between states (sometimes significantly), the informal usage of town and city is interchangeable in my American experience (though towns are generally considered smaller than cities by Americans). In England (since and Wales, the rule is simply that a town can be called a city only after a specific decree from the king or Queen. I feel such accommodation is warranted here because it is about a British band (albeit owned by the world now), and nearly all of the mislabeled locations are in Britain.

On an almost related note, the town hosting the Beatles on 24 January 1963 was Mold as noted here. It wss indeed in the Historic County of Flintshire, as listed in the article, but that column is not a list of county administrations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChrisJBenson (talkcontribs) 22:01, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with both points and have made the changes.-- Dr Greg  talk  23:16, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you kindly, Dr Greg. But as a Welshman, it is my patriotic duty to point out that the town of Mold has always been in Wales, not England. Thus the table's third column for 24 January 1963 should also be changed (from England) to Wales. I'd do it myself, except for the perils of the third column's vertical extent fraught from my editor unfamiliarity), so I'll ask you to place Mold back in Wales please, leaving Liverpool and Darwen etc. in England. Furthermore, the dual entry for 18/20 July 1963 puts Rhyl in England (incorrect) instead of Wales (correct). The entry for their previous visit to Rhyl on 14 July 1962 is already correct. Thank you. Revamp

[edit]

I am currently working on a revamp of the page, and I was wondering about everybody's thoughts about some things:

  • When articles for the tours are created, should the dates be removed from this page, with a link leading to the tour article (the way the Helen Sharpio tour already is)? I think this would be good, as it would cut down on this page's size, leaving only the non-tour shows here.
  • Is the 1964 US tour part of the world tour? I can't see anything really separating them, so isn't the US tour just a leg of the World tour?

Any thoughts on these and other things would be appreciated. Seltaeb Eht (talk) 16:03, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Two years later, but hopefully never too late(!) … I strongly disagree with removing individual concert dates when there's already a tour article. After all, the sole purpose of this piece is to provide a "list of the Beatles' live performances", and if a tour comprising many individual shows happens to merit its own article, I can't see why the reader is denied the basic information here.
Another problem is that the vast majority of the Beatles' concert dates contained two shows a day – "matinee" and evening. Yet it's only under 1966 (and even then, only inconsistently) that we mention the first and second shows on a given day. JG66 (talk) 01:44, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Two shows in Spain

[edit]

Whoever is editing this page needs to add the two shows they performed in Spain, one of them in Madrid July 2, 1965 and the other one in Barcelona .. http://www.beatlesbible.com/1965/07/02/live-plaza-de-toros-de-las-ventas-madrid-spain/

The Beatles' 1966 US tour including Canada

[edit]

Toronto, but NOT written in this article. Böri (talk) 08:31, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I know – it's the same for the 1965 "US" tour. What needs to happen first is that all the Beatles' concert dates should be included (you'll see that in a few cases where there's an article dedicated to a particular tour, no concert dates appear at all in this list). Aside from that, I've always wondered why we're not calling a tour of the US and Canada, even when there's only a date or two in Canada, a "North American tour". Christmas Shows

[edit]

Hi EDRobson, thanks for your corrections here. I agree with you about the lack of a show on either 5 January 1964 or 25 December – well, that is, it's consistent also with Barry Miles' The Beatles Diary. But Miles does give 11 January as the final date for the 1963–64 season, btw. JG66 (talk) 15:01, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's correct, the final date was 11 January 1964. But when I checked this page this morning it gave the final date as 10 January, so I changed it, which is why it now reads 11 January. The original programme also gives the final date as 11 January so I think we can be confident of this. EDRobson (talk) 15:07, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Aargh, so sorry – I read your comment with the edit backwards. You have indeed corrected it – thanks again! JG66 (talk) 15:11, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
