Campo Mayor
[edit]Otway performed a useful function in covering the 13th Light Dragoons' open left flank when they charged the French 26th Dragoons (and routed them), with the 2 squadrons of the 7th Portuguese dragoons under his immediate command.
However, when Long sent him after the 13th LD, who were pursuing the French cavalry, Otway lost control of his men and they also dispersed in pursuit. The usefulness of these squadrons as a support for the 13th LD was dependant on them retaining their order. Otway let down his commander badly, it was certainly not the other way around.
