carnation
[edit]Not only is a citation needed for the interpretation of the carnation as a symbol of healing (meaningless in this context), it is in fact probably not true. Carnations smell of cloves, and cloves look like nails. The carnation motif was frequently used in medieval painting to hint at Christ's Passion, and this is almost certainly its meaning here.
