Mahahual has a vibrant community which is ever expanding due to the white sandy beaches, large influx of tourists from the neighboring Costa Maya Cruise port, as well as close proximity to the new Maya Tren project which is expected to make this remote destination more accessible to additional tourist other than cruise passengers.

Mahahual is fast becoming known for water enthusiasts as one of the premier diving and fishing locations in the world. Fly fishing is growing rapidly due to the good chance of being able to catch Permit and Tarpon species, which are high on most fly-fisherman's "want list". With a seemingly endless amount of reef systems available and accessible from the shore, divers are making Mahahual a "must dive" destination as well. Sea turtles, spiney lobster, lionfish, hammerhead shark, Pargo, sailfish, and countless other species make up this vibrant ecosystem.

The Malecon is a boardwalk area which separates the beach from the restaurants, bars, and shops which stretch the entire length of the town.
