Mari people
[edit]"Many ethnic Mari activists live under fear of violence. The Mari activist and chief editor Vladimir Kozlov was badly beaten after he published criticism toward Leonid Markelov's politics."
Wrong acccents here. It may happen (and happens) to a person of any ethnicity. Leonid Markelov himself is Chuvash (as far as I heard), Chuvashs are another indigenous ethnicity. It's just a coincidance that Vladimir Kozlov is Mari. Russian-language opposition papers are being closed and ethnic Russian (by the way, most "Russians" in Mari El are métis) oppositioners are being exerted pressure as well. Journalists try to make some dirty nationalist sensation out of it. Very bad. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.40.108.213 (talk) 12:37, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- No, actually specifically Mari ethnicity is opressed in comparison to the Russian one. Not only political activists are threatened (and not only separaticls or leftists or anti-Government at all), but also the culture, religion (the only indigenous religion in Europe left!) and languages are being subdued.
- Markelov is officially Russian ( http://www.chuvash.ru/node/101 ), he was born in Moscow in 1963 and came to Mari El only in 1986 after University to work as military prosecutor.
- By the way, Markelov was criticised for such policy by President Putin. 95.26.49.182 (talk) 02:43, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- Well I live here and I don't see Maris being persecuted in any way. I invite all those Western hysteroid people to visit the republic and see that no one here really cares what ethnicity you have and what language you speak and that Maris have no problem speaking their language and they can believe in whatever they want. The problem is that many Maris themselves don't care much about their culture and get easily russified in the capital which is historically 70% Russian (urban population have always been mostly Russian since the Empire). Pure Mari population have always been mostly rural, so all that stuff like education, TV, books etc. are mostly Russian historically. Whose problem is that? Russification is a side-effect of urbanization, because, as I said, historically, urban population is Russian so all the minorities get russified eventually along the global urbanization trend. As for activists, as it was said above, in Mari El, any activism outside what is planned by the ruling party, is implicitly banned. Wrong accents to think that only Mari civil activists face problems. If i want to have a Russian nationalist march, then I will face problems too. "Mari ethnicity is opressed in comparison to the Russian one" yes that's the kind of sensationlist journalist juggling I was talking about. Comparing to the big Russian nation, a lot of ethnicities "are opressed in comparison", it depends on what you define by "opressed". And so what? 77.40.25.24 (talk) 21:49, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
Organised Category:Mari El, added new cats (Mari music!)
[edit]The main cat was getting cluttered, so I subdivided everything and categorised in the standard country ways. It should all better fit into the Wiki cat trees now.
I'm particularly pleased about the new Mari music and Category:Mari musical instruments, so please check those out! MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:14, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
