USS Missouri
[edit]I've twice now cut references in the plot summary about the naval destroyer being "portrayed by" the USS Missouri, but since they've been reverted both times, I wanted to discuss it here and allow the chance for some discussion before I cut it again. I don't have a copy of the DVD at hand, so you might be around about the 63 thing, but I'm still unsure about this addition to the article. First of all, the prose currently reads in the plot summary "...a U.S. "naval destroyer" (portrayed by the Iowa class battleship USS Missouri)...". It's not really accurate to say it's "portrayed by" the USS Missouri, is it? I mean, it's not as if the real-life USS Missouri itself was used in the film. It seems that it would be more accurate to say "based on the USS Missouri", but I would think that should be included in "Production", (something like: "The destroyer featured in the film was based on the real-life USS Missouri...) not in "Plot Summary". Further, the film doesn't refer to the ship as the USS Missouri in the movie itself, does it? If not, it would be WP:OR to say that the destroyer is based on the USS Missouri, and we'd need a source before we could include it here... — Hunter Kahn (c) 23:25, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
- I watched the film a couple of days ago. In the film the ship is not named apart from the label "US Naval Destroyer", but it's clearly an Iowa class battleship - e.g. it has two three-gun turrets forward and one aft. The pennant number 63 is clearly shown during one panning shot - it's almost from the same angle as this shot:
- It looks like stock footage of the Missouri was used (unless it was CGI it would have to have been, the real ship has been a museum in Pearl Harbor since 1999).
- The wording could be better, something like "The destroyer featured in the film was stock footage of the USS Missouri..." or something similar. It probably doesn't need to be in the actual plot summary either, but I'm not sure where else to put it. Trivia sections are bad.
- Finally, the ship was definitely shooting its main guns at the megalodon, rather than firing missiles. Special effects of discharges from the forward guns were added. A shame that the film-makers didn't have access to some footage of an Iowa-class firing a full broadside: Deadlock (talk) 23:47, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
