Relation with the term 'liquid crystal'

[edit]

After reading this, it is unclear to me whether the terms 'mesophase' and 'liquid-crystal phase' are synonyms or not. IUPAC Gold book does not help too much either. Liquid-crystal state is described as a 'mesomorphic state' with long-range orientational order and no (or partial) positional order. Are there mesomorphic states that do not fall into liquid-crystal category, i.e. states with long-range positional order and no orientational order?

The Gold book entry mesomorphic transition seems to imply that all mesophases are liquid-crystals. Jähmefyysikko (talk) 08:20, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, found the answer: Plastic crystal. Hopefully I’ll find the time to update the article later, based on [1]. Jähmefyysikko (talk) 12:46, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
