This page needs some cleaning up. I expanded some on the engine lathe, but I think some more sections need to be worked in along with a number of more photos, as the engine lathe is perhaps the most important tool of the industrial age and its history and evolution should be detailed extensively.Rvannatta 03:49, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Term "Engine lathe"
[edit]Folks: It's not actually the power that gives rise to this term, but the automatic feed of the cutting tool. The sense of "engine" here isn't in the prime-mover energy-converter sense, but in the earlier mechanical-device sense. There were "siege engines" long before the steam engine. :D

Title
[edit]Can we change the title to Metal lathe? It just irks me they way it is titled now, even though it's probably not in contradiction to any rules. Wizard191 (talk) 06:40, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't see any reason not to change it. I think Metal Lathe sounds better, and would be easier to find.JoshOrndorff (talk) 06 July 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.205.127.155 (talk)
Illustration of concept or actual use
[edit]I just read this article because I wasn't clear how a lathe actually worked...what goes where and that sort of thing. After reading it, I still don't really know. The article would be vastly improved with a few clear illustration of the machine in use. Generally line drawings are much easier to to comprehend when compared to photos, although not always, of course. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SpunkyFinklestein (talk • contribs) 21:56, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Expansion
[edit]I am new to the working of Wikepedia but would like to see addedin the turning stub some deatils of types of lathes tools. I don't want to mess up anyone elses work but we need to add types of lathes such as:
- Centre Lathes:
- Centre lathe (no gap)
- Centre lathe with gap
- Centre lathe with double gap (turning of railway axles complete with wheels attached)
- Oil country Lathes (large bore for piping and casing use din oil industry)
- Break lathes largest of lathe used with a double bed (one bed moves over the main bed)
- Relieving lathes for the turning of taps and gear form tools
- Copy lathes
- CNC lathes
- NC lathes
- Pegboard lathes
- automatic lathes
- multi spindle precision auto lathes
- single spindle auto lathes
- model builders lathes
- capstan lathes
- turret lathes
- Vertical lathes (sometimes referred to as vertical boring machines
These are just a sample of types of lathes, each lathe section is further categorised by sizes and manufacturer. There should also be a further section for ancillary equipment associated with the lathe tool. Bugbear, I hate it to see amateurs refer to HSS twist drills as 'drill bits' this term should be banned from all technical articles dealing with machine tools as it is a layman's term. High speed twist drills should be designated as HSS TD. This separates them from other types of flat blade drills use din drilling operations and propriety spade drills used in industry. ieuan sant Ieuan Sant 10:30, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Ieuan, I moved your comments here because they are all applicable to this article. Also, note that some of your requests are already discussed in this article. Wizard191 (talk) 22:22, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, I don't mind collaborating I have spent most of my life in machine shops and know a bit. I was dissapointed my article on types of lathes was removed because it is a serious attempt to educate the public.Ieuan Sant 22:32, 24 July 2010 (UTC) I just wish I knew more on how wikkipedia worked —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ieuan Sant (talk • contribs)
- Well that's why I moved your comments here, so that you can add your knowledge to the proper article. Wizard191 (talk) 22:52, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed—Ieuan, there is plenty of room here for you to augment the types listed in this article. You may find others doing cleanup afterward (spelling, linking, etc), but that is actually helpful (not hurtful) because it polishes the content. And if any one of these types gets to be having so much content that its section here would be very long, it can be spun off into its own article. (But that's probably not likely to happen very soon.) Feel free to augment the info here. — ¾-10 02:20, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
