Washington Connection to Mordecai Gist

[edit]

The connection with Anne Washington (and thus to President George Washington) appears to have been disproven. Anne Washington appears to have married a Christopher Gyse/Gise, and she also appears to have died without bearing any children. Some references includes The Washington Family (1893) and a GenForum posting. In any case, it appears to be controversial enough (or disproven satisfactorily) that if it is included in the article, there should be major caveats attached to it. Please add this information to his page

[edit]

The Maryland govt. website and the photo of his memorial at find a grave have specific dates for his birth and death and information about the uncertainty of his date of death:

"Biography: Born 22 February 1743 at "Stonehall," Baltimore Country"

"There is a bit of confusion as to exactly when Mordecai Gist died. His gravestone at Saint Michaels' Church in Charleston states that he died on August 2, 1792, but witnesses to his Last Will and Testament claim that he signed it a month later on September 2nd. His obituary from September 3rd in the Columbian Herald declared that he died "yesterday," meaning on September 2nd. Other dates from a variety of source range between June-October 1792. In any case, Mordecai Gist was definitely deceased by November of 1792, as stated in his pension.

I am only experienced in doing minor corrections like typos and do not know how to add references, but the information is out there so it would be nice to add it in. Would a real editor please add this information? Thank you! Ebdonaldson (talk) 12:50, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
