'Horse Hunters of the Imperial Guard'
This translation of the term chasseurs à cheval de la Garde is incorrect and misleading.
While chasseur does translate literally as 'hunter,' in the military context the word had been used since the mid-C18th, if not earlier, to refer to light troops of various kinds; chasseur generally signifying light infantry and chasseur á cheval meaning light cavalry.
Chasseurs à cheval de la Garde, therefore, should be rendered as 'light cavalry of the Guard.'
