DYK
The articles isn't on Wikipedia's DYK for today. What's going on? AJona1992 (talk) 23:48, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
POV and UNDUE?
Sorry if I forgot to do this earlier, but there seems to be significant problems regarding POV and UNDUE within the article. During my copy-edit of the article yesterday, I've picked up quite a number of instances where minor aspects of the murder made their way into the article. I've removed some of them, but I will list a few instances:
- "Selena hung up and told her husband, Chris Pérez, that she could not trust Saldivar anymore. Perez agreed." was it detrimental that Perez agreed?
- "she went to "A Place To Shoot", a full-service gun shop" full service or not, does it matter?
- The first two paragraphs of "Early 1994–1995" can really be tightened by briefly describing the early relations of Selena and Saldivar.
- "Selena replied, "Dad, you think all people are bad"." Unnecessary quote.
- "their phones lit up, with many callers accusing them of lying." just say people accused them of lying.
As I read the article, it seems to give me the impression that the author did not follow NPOV, with instances like '"anyone but her" and "not the good girl".' The whole article seems to portray Saldivar very negatively through the subtle terminology used and the recounting of seemingly all the instances where Saldivar fired others, stole products and lied to Selena and her associates. All in all, I think the subject of the article contains too much POV for Wikipedia to document neutrally. --Sp33dyphil © • © 23:54, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
- I'll remove/reword the suggested sentences and will fix the POV/UNDUE very soon. Best, Jonayo! Selena 4 ever 17:31, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
- Questions
Should I add in the "Black Friday" section that because of Selena's religion her father did not want the doctors to perform a blood transfusion (Jehovah's Witnesses and blood transfusions) or should I leave that in the "response" sections? - Comments
I have tried to remove violations of WP:NPOV. The sources (and books) really doesn't have anything nice to say about Saldivar. I did follow WP:NPOV, I just couldn't find anything online or offline that represented her positively. The only positive things Saldivar had done was creating the fan club, boosting membership to become San Antonio's biggest clubs, helping Selena with admirers, helping Selena with business stuff and I believe I noted all of that in the article. 1. Well written
a. Concise
Comment: I find that the lead is very well written. Just from reading the lead, I can understand the idea of the article I am about to read. Spelling and grammar is perfect, with adequate use of accents for Spanish terms. It passes this subcategory ===b. Compliance with Manual of Style is evident. Due to the number of sources cited, the MOS guideline on fiction is irrelevant.
2. Verifiability and accuracy
This is very well passed. There are accurate descriptions of the event itself, with an entire "Impact" section, giving impacts of Selina's fans and any other impacts. The many sources proved relevant linking information and sources to reinforce the information provided in the article.
3. Broadness of range
The topic is very well covered - most of the article is dedicated to the Murder. The article does go off-topic slightly, whilst discussing Selina's music, although this can be interpreted as contextual information, and thus passes.
4. avoidance of bias
EAch opinion is given in equal weight. Due to the fact that this is a mostly factual article, the opinions that exist do not have great effect upon the overall article.
6. Stability
According to the edit history, only one editor has been working on this article for the previous month (the nominator). The article is therefore stable.
Illustrations
The article is illustrated with four photos. Only the principal image (near the top of the article) is adequately referenced. Images have captions which are relevant to the paragraph wherein the image is located. None contain re-use information.
Irrelevant
What in the world does Selena's death have to do with the passage of a concealed carry law in TX? While it may be noteworthy that Selena's father campaigned against "illegal handguns", creating a separate section entitled "Law" clearly is meant to imply that Selena's death was the impetus behind the passage, when it obviously wasn't. A section entitled "Law" is appropriate, for example, in an entry such as "The Murder of Megan Kanka" but it has no place in an entry when the particular law being mentioned has absolutely nothing to do, at all, with the person or event being discussed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.141.152.223 (talk) 05:27, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
I have read the article with interest, and the section titled "Law" makes no sense to me. Has something been missed out? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.7.130.42 (talk) 17:08, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- According to sources, the law has a lot to do with Selena's murder... that's why it is on the article. Best, Jonayo! Selena 4 ever 15:27, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
I am removing the Law section. It has nothing to do with Selena's death,I read the Cites you give and all they say are the date the law passed etc, nothing about the law having to do with Selena. Also the wording in the Law section is misleading. It says, After Selena's murder, the Texas Senate passed a bill to legalize carrying a concealed weapon in Texas. That really makes it sound like the Death of Selena caused the Law to be passed, and that is not the case. Now you can keep the bit about her Father not liking handguns or whatever but I am scrapping the Law part unless you can prove that the law was passed with Selena's death in mind.--BeckiGreen (talk) 18:25, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Recent content removal from User:Vranak
I reverted Vranak's recent content removal because the user believes that the source is "bogus citation makes no mention of either Jennifer Lopez or the Selena film", however the source does say "And her film biography turned Jennifer Lopez into a household name." I believe the mention of the film becoming her breakthrough role should stay. Best, Jonayo! Selena 4 ever 22:17, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I scanned the article for J. Lo's name but missed that instance. Since it is there I have no objection to what you have restored. Although I'd also credit her album On the 6 and the film Out of Sight in that regard. Vranak (talk) 23:43, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- It's alright, I'm glad we've reached consensus. Best, Jonayo! Selena 4 ever 16:02, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
People Commemorative Issues
The article states "People commemoratives have been published only for Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor and Selena." which is not accurate. Commemorative issues were also issued for Katharine Hepburn, John F. Kennedy, Jr., Johnny Carson, Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Paul Newman, Whitney Houston, and even the soap opera All My Children. And there is one for the "love story" of Prince William and Kate Middleton. 97.96.22.118 (talk)
- I am expecting to update the article before March 31 and will address this issue as well. Best, jona(talk) 02:09, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
