Is the Naartjie a hybrid or local varient?

The Satsuma is very different from the local Naartjie. Naartjies are usualy quite small and have a hard skin. Taste is quite sharp with a strong citrus tang very close to a lemon. Satusam's on the other hand are larger, and have a loose and softer skin. The segments are easily pulled apart, taste is very sweet and less acidic than the naartjie. Manderins and Satsuma's are virtually identical, except the Manderin is usually a lot smaller than either three.

Reply: Hmm... growing up in S.A. I'm not familiar with satsuma's or manderins but indeed with naartjies. Naartjies' vary quite a bit in sweetness (and some other less obvious factors) in my experience of eating naartjies every winter since I can remember. I can't give citation for this, of course, but seeing that what you state above is written in the article, I raise the question as to how much experience you have with the fruits mentioned. Merger proposal

I would like to merge this page with Citrus unshiu, but first that needs to be the result of moving Satsuma (fruit) to the scientific name (in accordance with the policy of Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants.
