Fair use rationale for Image:Niconico donga screenshot.png

[edit]

Image:Niconico donga screenshot.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Onomatopoeia

[edit]

This article describes "niconico" as being an onomatopoeic word for smiling. Now, smiling is largely a silent activity. Can anyone explain in which way "nico nico" can be called onomatopoietic? Wouldn't it rather be something like a pictograhpic representation? Remprandt (talk) 17:58, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Japanese use onomatopoeia in a different way than English speakers do. There are countless sounds and actions that are assigned words in Japanese that have no English counterparts. Often, It's a sound descriptor for an action, but the action doesn't necessarily have to make a sound. I wish I could drum up some examples from the top of my head but I'm blanking, other than the obvious ones like "doki doki" for a heartbeat. AtaruMoroboshi (talk) 02:26, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipededia suggests the term "ideophone" for the type of onomatopoia you are talking about. I suggest using that term instead of "onomatopoia" because for most people "onomatopoia" would refer to an imitation of sound. To me it sounds really weird to call a word for a silent activity such as smiling onomatopoetic. "doki doki", by the way, seems to qualify for this narrower sense of onomatopoia. After all the heart makes a sound. Remprandt (talk) 12:05, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Traffic Ranking

[edit]

According to Alexa, Nico Nico Douga is now the 13th most popular site in Japan, rather than 6th, as the article states. It looks like they had a massive drop in traffic back in May, which they still haven't recovered from. Any ideas what happened? --75.190.161.228 (talk) 21:02, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was because they started regulating anime footage and deleting MAD videos. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.84.17.35 (talk) 07:00, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the site has seen it's peak traffic. I have update the sentence in the opening paragraph to reflect it's current ranking, although maybe it may be better to find a source that indicated its historic popularity. --Nabulator (talk) 21:18, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Move

[edit]

I propose moving Nico Nico Douga to Nico Nico Doga or Nico Nico Dōga. On [English] Google Nico Nico Dōga pulled up more results than Nico Nico Doga, but those results counted in Nico Nico Dōga counted those in Nico Nico Doga. Nico Nico Doga pulled up approximately 7,020,000 while Nico Nico Dōga pulled up approximately 7,330,000. Nico Nico Douga pulled up approximately 1,920,000 results. And also with WP:MJ.Moocowsrule (talk) 07:13, 11 October 2008 (UTC)moocowsrule[reply]

The official English spelling (as seen in the logo) is Nico Nico Douga, thus this is what we use. There is no need to move.-- 07:28, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Financing

[edit]

"The Premium-membership fee is 525 yen (about US$5) a month. As of May 14, 2010, they reached 800,000 premium members." "where 100 million yen (US$948,000) of that comes from paid premium memberships" Wait what? 525¥ × 800,000 members = 420M ¥. In which case their income would far exceed their hosting costs.

You missed the "As of May 9, 2008...".-- 01:12, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nico Nico Live

[edit]

Here's an article about Nico Nico Douga's role in Japan's new media: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nb20110610a1.html On that note, I find the current version of the article terribly outdated (there is no mention of Nico Nico Live, even) As I am busy on other projects, can someone update the article, or at least incorporate the above source? Thank you. _dk (talk) 10:51, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Japan/MG27Dh01.html Another article on Nico Nico's role in new journalism, including Nico Nico's most recent financial conditions, etc. _dk (talk) 10:42, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Copyright Problems"?

[edit]

The title of this section in the article doesn't speak for the rest of the section.

(It is more like "Fighting Copyright Problems" than "Copyright infrigement of Nikovideos" like the section title implies).

I can't think of an alternate title, which is why I didn't change it. Karjam, AKA KarjamP (talk) 17:32, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Move Page to "Niconico"

[edit]

As per the subject, I'll like to move the page to "Niconico" if everybody is in favor. It dropped the term "Douga" and re-stylized the name as how it is now. Here's the source:[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bumblezellio (talkcontribs) 13:49, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Language

[edit]

The article says the website supports Japanese, English and Chinese (and no <ref> there) but I see no language select options/buttons on the site. Do they really support these languages?? User670839245 (talk) 05:08, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I see the language options at the very bottom of http://www.nicovideo.jp/ _dk (talk) 05:55, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
but I don't see it? User670839245 (talk) 11:57, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
