Name of article

[edit]

Doesn't the recent change from "Fair Play-ligaen" to "Oddsenligaen" illustrate why this article should be under Norwegian second division or similar? The names of the sponsors will continue to change, but in most situations, both in the media and in everyday speech, it will continue to be known as the 2. division.--Barend (talk) 15:26, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree with you, even though I was the one that moved the article. The issues have also been discussed at WikiProject Football (discussion can be seen here, and for me it looks like there were a consensus to move the page to Norwegian Second Division, but noone have done it. I have now requested a technical move for this page. Mentoz86 (talk) 10:36, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think the article should be moved to 2. Divisjon, to reflect what the sources are calling it. The current article title is not being used anywhere. Eldumpo (talk) 06:29, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds reasonable, but I'm a little reluctant to move the page to that title. The page was moved to 2. divisjon in May 2009 but the move was reverted in August 2009 with the rationale "2. divisjon is too generic.". While Norwegian Second Division is as generic as 2. divisjon, I think the current title is fine since we should use english titles, and since the article has had the same name for a while. On the other hand, while Norwegian Second Division was a consistent name when the other leagues were named Norwegian Premier League and Norwegian First Division, it's not anymore since those two leagues are named Tippeligaen and Adeccoligaen. I've left a message to the WikiProject Norway and hopefully some Norwegian editors more experienced than me will leave a comment. --Mentoz86 (talk) 18:44, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Second Division since this is an English Wikipedia, and Norwegian since there are many second divisions.
It is appropriate to use English if there are reliable sources but in this case the only English source is Soccerway which uses '2. Divisjon'. 'Norwegian Second Division' seems to be a completely made up name. If the consensus is that 2Divisjon is not clear, then what about adding Norway in brackets? The result of the move request was: Move to 2. divisjon. Clear consensus for using "2. Divisjon", and that the parenthetical disambiguation is unnecessary. Cúchullain t/c 20:27, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Norwegian Second Division2. Divisjon (Norway) – I originally moved the article to "2. Divisjon" on the basis of the sources at the article, but it was reverted. In proposing this formal RM I have modified the proposal so that the "Norway" qualifier is added in brackets, in order to make it clearer. The proposed new article title better reflects the references to this league, and follows the higher levels (Tippeligaen, Adeccoligaen), which already have Norwegian-language titles. I believe there's no justification for the current made-up name. Eldumpo (talk) 18:46, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - Divisjon is a Norwegian-only word as far as I know (in Swedish and Danish they use Division, like in English), so it wouldn't be neccessary to have a disambiguated title. Of the other articles you mention, I believe Tippeligaen is in it's correct location as there is no good non-sponsor name. However, I believe Adeccoligaen should maybe be moved to it's non-sponsor name which is 1. divisjon, but I'm curious if English-language sources calls that league for 1. divisjon or Norwegian First Division. • Comment which Norwegian is "divisjon" a word? bokmal or nynorsk? If "division" is used in the other Norwegian, then I think the article should use "division" -- 70.24.247.127 (talk) 04:34, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm not sure how it's relevant. All 6 working refs/links at this article refer to 'divisjon' (including the English-language ref). Eldumpo (talk) 20:59, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's ridiculous. This is an English page, but that doesn't mean every title has to have an English name. – Michael (talk) 21:42, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That link is for a hockey league. I don't think hockey is big enough in Norway that a 'football qualifier' would need to be added to this page. At present, the 3rd level in Norwegian hockey does not have a Wiki article. Eldumpo (talk) 09:12, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's not clear from the one working link at the Third Division page what the league is being referred to as, but Soccerway refer to it as "3. Divisjon". Therefore, it probably makes sense to change that article as well, although it may be that needs a separate RM. Eldumpo (talk) 10:27, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
