Early Life

I believe it is misleading to say that Wayne "served a tour of duty with the Coast Guard, 1961-65." I was in the USCG boot camp at Alameda when he was there, and I'm pretty sure he was a six-month reservist, like me. I entered boot camp on Feb. 20, 1962 and believe Wayne was already there. Boot camp was a three-month program, which means Wayne could have started as early as December 1961. If that is correct, he would have completed his six months of active duty in May and then begun serving five and a half years of reserve duty. In any case, his service time would not be considered a "tour of duty." Note, incidentally, that Wayne made several feature films between 1962 and 1965. He certainly could not have done that if he had been an active duty serviceman during those years.

Later Works

Deleted "but ultimately declined the role due to his father's failing health." since the source cited (http://www.supermansupersite.com/0421242.html), an interview with Executive producer Ilya Salkind, does not state that, only that Wayne auditioned for the role.
