Question about the Photo

I don't think that is the correct photo. It links to an obituary for a Robert F. Sargent who was in the Navy. The man who took the famous photograph was in the Coast Guard. is there any reason for believing that this is the correct person? The obituary does not mention the photograph. And if it is a different person, that throws into doubt the other info (birth , death, etc)

This article has three sources:

• The New York Times, August 1999 — passing mention of ".. the D-Day landing (best known from Robert Capa's pictures but here in Robert F. Sargent's photograph for the Coast Guard),"
• famouspictures.org, a blog by somebody unnamed — "Behind the camera: Chief Photographer’s Mate (CPHOM) Robert F. Sargent of the United States Coast Guard (USCG)NAIL Control Number: NLR-PHOCO-A-7298" and "The photographer, Coast Guard Chief Photographer’s Mate Robert F. Sargent, was a veteran of the Allied invasions of Sicily and Salerno."
• United States Coast Guard official website — "An official U.S. Coast Guard photograph by CPHOM Robert F. Sargent, USCG."

None of these sources say anything further about Sargent – no date of birth, no date of death.

• 2014-05-07 — added 8/26/1923 – 5/8/2012 — no source, reverted the same day
• 2014-06-07 — added 8/26/1923 – 5/8/2012 — sourced to an obituary for somebody who worked for the U.S. Post Office
• 2016-05-31 — changed to 8/26/1923 – 1969 — flagged as "wrong obituary" and ref removed, but DoB left as 8/26/1923 and DoD set to 1969 for no discoverable reason
• 2019-01-13 — changed back to 8/26/1923 – 5/8/2012 — no reason given
• 2022-02-18 — changed to 8/26/1923 – 5/8/1969 — just death year changed, day and month kept, no source
• 2022-07-22 — changed back to 8/26/1923 – 5/8/2012 — "According to Library of Congress, he died in 2012", but no link offered
• 2023-07-08 — SD set to "American photographer (1923–2012)"
• 2024-06-07 — SD changed to "American photographer (1923–1969)", article change to 8/26/1923 – 1969 — day and month of death removed
• 2024-06-28 — CN added to the SD
• 2024-06-29 — SD fixed and CN moved into the article body
• 2024-08-03 — CN just removed, no source added
• 2024-08-03 — CN put back
• 2024-08-04 — CN removed again, no source added

So, we now have a date of birth (8/26/1923) from an obituary that is the wrong person and a year of death (1969) that seems to have no source at all.
