Is Roy adopted?
[edit]As someone who watched the programme on CBBC, I'm pretty sure that the programme made it pretty clear that Roy was born into a human family despite him being a 2D animated cartoon, therefore he is the biological son of his parents and biological younger sibling of his older human sibling. For the person/s who typed he was adopted on the character table, give me proof anywhere from the programme that clearly shows in a way that he is adopted. 123typewrite123 (talk) 10:45, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
- Coming from another person who not only watched and enjoyed the show on CBBC, but binge watched most of the series very recently, there is absolutely no evidence in the show that Roy is adopted. There is also little evidence that Roy is the biological child of Bill and/or Maura O' Brien either. However, there is a scene in the show, to be specific Season 2 Episode 5 'Death In The Family', where Roy and his sister Becky are at their grandmother's house, and Becky shows him an old newspaper article surrounding Roy's birth lying around. The headline reads 'Ireland's first cartoon baby', showing a cover image of Bill and Maura coddling a newborn baby Roy wrapped in a towel. You know, the ones they give to aid the comfort of a recently born child. To give more context on the scene, the two siblings are looking around their grandma's house out of boredom, emphasising the fact that she has a hoarding problem, keeping items around from years ago. This shows that the newspaper had been kept for years, if not a decade. It seems unlikely that a grandparent would keep a newspaper article of their grandson's birth if they were in fact adopted, not to mention that with the cover image of the newspaper, this only further proves my point that Roy is likely not adopted. Additionally, although Roy is not canon in relation to the short film Badly Drawn Roy (that I have also watched), the TV series is still loosely based off the short and both have very similar plotlines. With that being said, the short film also makes mention of Roy Shannon's birth and how his biological parents are in fact humans, so it seems safe to say that this would apply to Roy O' Brien in Roy as well. I think a lot of people may seem to think Roy is adopted due to the first photo shown in the intro, showing a baby Roy in a basket on a doorstep, presumably his parents'. This may come off to viewers as if someone intentionally left him there, myself included when I was younger. However, I do feel as if this is unlikely in relation to the scene I mentioned earlier, and the fact that the show does have plenty of continuity errors (eg. Roy's age switching from 9 to 11 at times, especially in the first few episodes of Season 1), which is understandable considering the long gap between season production with the lengthy process of both filming, animating and special effects (excluding the gap between 3 and 4, which I presume was filmed in one go).
