No, it is not a simple commercial district. This area usually used as both commercial zone and living zone. See article in Japanese wiki. Laitr Keiows (talk) 01:59, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's nice to know what a shotengai is. However it would be nice to know more about them? Does this style of commercial district date back to the Edo Period? How are shotengais faring with the changing times of major outlets and Western-style shopping malls? Who goes to a shotengai?
