Tributaries

[edit]

Order

[edit]

If anyone can sort the Skeena tributaries by geographical order rather than their current alphabetical order, please do so. Deet 19:08, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Different lists of Skeena tributaries

[edit]

There seems to be different lists with tributaries for the Skeena. First, there is the Skeena River article itself. Then there is the List of rivers of the Americas, which I populated based on the Skeena River article. Then there is the List of British Columbia rivers, which says the Skeena is the in Marcus Passage Watershed, and mentions the McNeil River as a tributary. I'm a bit skeptical of the Marcus Passage and McNeil River information. I'm comfortable that the list of tributaries in the Skeena article is correct based on the reference, but it may still be incomplete if other tribuataries don't have Chinook salmon (which was the focus of the reference information). If anyone knows how to improve and correctly align the various lists, please do so. Deet 19:08, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Starting new articles

[edit]

If anyone wants to start a new article on any of the tributary rivers, here are some tips:

  • To create a new article is easy... just click on one of the red links in the Skeena article, but unlike editing articles, you need to create an account first before you can make a new article.
  • See also Help:Starting a new page
  • You can find public domain images in different locations. For example, you can visit http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-229EF8B/search , check off "visual images" and type "Ecstall" into the search box to find pictures relating to the Ecstall river. If the photo was created prior to 1949, it is public domain in Canada (although other dates may be relevant for its status in other countries). See Template talk: PD-Canada for more info on Canadian image copyright. If you use an historical picture, you might want to crop off the text added by BC Archives first by using a photo editor. When you upload the file, put "{{PD-Canada}}" into the image description, and be sure to reference BC Archives as the source. See Image:Sternwheeler Inlander.jpg for an example.
  • Or better yet, contribute one of your own photos or river maps by clicking on the link "Upload file" on the left side any Wikipedia page. Deet 01:21, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updating these

[edit]

I never really looked close at that section before; as noted by Deet, if a stream doesn't have Chinook it won't be on there; but those are also not all tributaries, rather they are tributaries of tributaries....streams of the Skeena basin, many of them would never get articles......I'm tempted to just copy over the list of this section from List of British Columbia rivers.....about the Marcus Passage watershed thing, that's been on that list for a long time.....it's not a well-known term for the saltwater offshore from Rupert, looks to be something just picked off the map....but it's not Hecate Strait, not the Dixon Entrance, not Portland Channel/Inlet....hmmmm. See Holland starting at p 105 for useful river information. --KenWalker | Talk 22:13, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This article needs to be integrated into this one, not merged that is, just its info in condensed form should be in the text of this article, since it's the Skeena's headwaters that are being talked about; I'll try and get to a Klappan River stub so it's "in the system" as it's a related/needed article in this context. I wish that Sacred Headwaters place had a slightly different/longer name, as it's awful pretentious-sounding and kinda kitsch; but used in government studies and hype as well as in FN and environmentalist studies and hype. To me it's cheese, but it's the name and the only name; Klappan coal-bed methane project is on Tahltan or Kaska, I've forgotten which and needs to be a separate article; but it's in the "Sacred Headwaters. BTW any suggestions/preceptions of "Skeena Country", i.e. what its boundaries might be considered to be.Skookum1 (talk) 03:11, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

map

[edit]

Re Shannon1's edit comment about the map, it's pretty standard on river pages to have jursidiction-wide maps; I agree a closeup of the Skeena region only would be benefiicial, especially as a way to show major towns and mountains/mountain ranges along it and around it, and its major tributaries; this is also true of the Stikine, the Chilcotin, a local on the Peace region etc. Location maps are also standard at the top of the article, i.e. in the infobox; not that there are any specific guildines on that, I'm not sure actually, I dno't cruise {{WP:Rivers}} very much, just see what's been done with other articles....Skookum1 (talk) 04:11, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
