Major cleanup needed

[edit]

I have added a bunch of tags to the article...I don't mean to be obnoxious, but just wanted to be as clear as possible.

Exhaustive lists of movie theaters, textile showrooms and schools are unnecessary in the context of an encyclopedia article. Also, the giant list of "famous personalities" is lacking wiki links and/or sources...as a result, there's no way to verify if most of these people are actually notable (refer to this article for more info about Wikipedia's notability requirements).

Overall, I appreciate the work the editors have put into this article - I was specifically looking for info about Solapur after seeing its name mentioned in a news article, and was glad to find it. However, this article definitely needs to be cleaned up, and it'd be great if someone familiar with the topic was willing to give it a shot.fdfgghyyyyy -Rhrad (talk) 15:02, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kannada chauvinism

[edit]

Akkalkot may have good no. of Kannadigas.Of course articles from deccan herald claims the facts. Everyone is entitled to their opinion

Telugu Community

[edit]

Solapur is very famous for Textile Industries, Solapur Chaddars and Towels are Famous not only in India but also in other countries, to make Solapur proud. It has many communities, one of them is which speaks Telugu and is called Padmashali’s.It is believed that Padmavathi of Mangapura of Tirupati declares that she was the daughter of Padmashali. Hence, the name Padmashali.

The chief occupation of the Padmashili community is weaving. They are recognized for their hardwork and sincerity. And with their expertise and skill they have earned a prominent place of pride in Solapur City — Preceding unsigned comment added by Reddiz (talkcontribs) 17:48, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reverts

[edit]

The following sentences are being edited out by someone:

A melting pot with a confluence of Marathi, Telugu and Kannada languages

Should we not be proud of this diversity? Anyway, source is the Maharashtra government website, here.

The word "Kannada" in Kannada saint and revolutionary Basavanna

There can be no dispute about this, surely?? Just hatred for all things "Kannadi"?

Removal of Kannada, Telugu and Sanskrit from from sentence about Vrutta Darshan

Vrutta Darshan is a Marathi channel. Those people have the goodness, and also the good sense, to offer newscasts in various languages. This is a fact. What incomprehensible chauvinism demands that this fact be hidden? Same with theatres offering Telugu movies and newspapers in various languages.

Please understand that the (unintended) effect of all these chauvinist reverts is to suppress all the goodness of the Marathi people (and they are on the whole very, very good people) and cause the world to believe that they are all horrible chauvinists. Please also understand that mention of the existance of non-Marathi people is not laying the ground for break-up of Maharashtra. That cannot be. I have removed the sentence about Akkalkot because this page is not the one to mention all that. Please let the other sentences stand. Regards, ImpuMozhi 13:59, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Emphasis

[edit]

Dear Imphu, What I object is there is kind of Kannada emphasis,or tendency to show that'Solapur is in Maharashtra but see the Kannada influence in it'.Solapur was never a big problem between Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Bidar,Bagalkot,Uttar Kanada(Karwar),Belgaum all are the melting pots of Marathi(Konkani) and Kannada. But this is not mentioned in any of the article.Whats so great about it?If you want to show up this in Solapur let others follow the same path. Basavanna is a great saint, again you tend to emphasise that he was a Kannada.Good that you are proud of it but why show up the pride every now and then in an article of a Maharashtrian city?

Vrutta Darshan is no big deal.Just say its there why do u emphasise it telecasts Kannada programmes also!!Zee Marathi,ETV Marathi and Sahyadri are surely more watched than Vrutta Darshan.

Theater names which show up Telugu movies are also shown up.Arent there any cinema halls which screen Marathi movies? Why just elaborate abt those cinema halls which screen telugu movies?

I dont hate anyone. But if Kannadigas are too much assertive about Belgaum ,why cant we?Please dont hijack our Maharashtrian cities.. (mahawiki 17:01, 30 May 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Hi, I just reinstated the link to the Kannada article on Solapur, that someone deleted. All controversy aside, I don't think there is any reason to delete the link to a Kannada article on this city. Interestingly, the user who deleted the Kannada article link retained the links to the German and Japanese articles on Solapur!

Sincerely, Gajamukhu 19:51, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

" Solapur has been a center of controversy between Karnataka and Maharashtra governments since the creation of both states in 1956. " This statement by you is factually incorrect. I have removed the same --Ninad 07:25, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Coolninad, I did NOT insert the above statement into the page. My only edit on this page has been reverting the link to the Kannada article on Solapur. Please check the history of the page before making allegations like this. And please sign your name (by using four tildes) after posting messages on the discussion page, so you can be easily identified. Sincerely, Gajamukhu 05:06, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to clarify that my statement above was a response to Ninad's (or Coolninad's) incorrect allegation

Dear Gajamukhu, " Solapur has been a center of controversy between Karnataka and Maharashtra governments since the creation of both states in 1956. " This statement by you is factually incorrect. Please stop posting factually incorrect data.

Ninad altered the original statement by deleting my name from it after I posted the above response, so I posted his statement again to be clear. Thanks. Gajamukhu 23:51, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

[edit]

If there is info about mixed Kannada- Marathi community in Belgaum and the border dispute then why not here? Someone please get census stats on the percentages of Kannad and Marathi people in this city. Blnguyen | BLabberiNg 04:57, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is also a lot of stuff missing. The history seems to have two random historical incidents. Need more geographic info, and info about the people. Blnguyen | BLabberiNg 05:30, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism on Solapur Page

[edit]

Look at the lines inserted by user Mahawiki " It is unfortunate that Maharashtra took away Solapur from Karnataka and shamelessly demanding Belgaum."

Statements like this don't help anyone. This should be treated as users inserting statements of factual inaccuracy and misleading, a version of vandalism.

Dear Mahawiki, I have deleted this statement, please refrain from inserting such NPOV statements.

Sonnalige Siddharama

[edit]
As one can see above the user coolninad had thought the pro-Kannada POV was inserted by me.This version of Solapur article has been checked by admin.Any additions/deletions should back by citations.KNM is producing no sensible citations.Plz provide publication house,ISBN no etc of the book.Morever that source can trashed if found biased. That is ofcourse with the consent of admin.Stop pushing Kannadi POV.

Mahawiki 06:24, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mahawiki, that information added by User:Onlyfact were not POV. They are facts. I have added the citation.
Ok, here is the Google-books weblink for that book.
Also, these pages give you clear information on Sonnalige was the earlier name of the city, and details about Sonnalige Siddharama.
Hope it is fine with you now. Please do not revert back the cited information.

Language Chavunism --- once again....Please stop this

[edit]

Hello All,

About Solapur Demographics, the nclm.nic.in site says there are 46 % Kannada speaking people in 'SOLAPUR Tehsil(Taluk).' and not in 'SOLAPUR CITY'. As far as my knowledge, M.C stands for Municipal corporation.Teshil definately means Taluk, look at wikipedia article for th same. However there is a mention of 23 % Telugu people. THIS IS AN ARTICLE RELATED TO SOLAPUR CITY ONLY. Also, here is an extract from the Karnataka CET brouchure 2007 about eligibility. (http://cet.kar.nic.in/Brochure%202007a.pdf) - Page 20. "A candidate whose mother tongue is Kannada, Tulu or Kodava should have resided and studied in disputed Kannada speaking area of 'South Sholapur' or Akkalkot or Jath or Gadhinglaj Taluks of Maharashtra State or Kasargod Taluk of Kerala State. The candidate shall undergo a Kannada Language test, which will be conducted by the CET Cell on 10-05-2007 at 2.00 p.m. to establish his ability to speak, read and write Kannada."

Now, Solapur City clearly lies in North Solapur Tehsil(See map on Main page of http://solapur.gov.in/ if you like). Its absolutely O.K to mention about cultural diversities,Just because Belgaum is claimed by Maharashtra, does not mean you should have tit-for-tat attitude.

Solapur References

[edit]

Dear Editors and All Wellwisher Wikipedians, Anybody who wishes to give proper references for Solapur irrespective of the Majority Kannada or Official Marathi or Hindi can provide the citation and useful information, please see WP:CITE , Please stop arguing for Kannada Vs Marathi, We all are first wikipedians on this platform and this is english wikipedia Ankush 89 (talk) 11:07, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I fully support that sentiment. The article should be based on reliable sources (in any language, with English being especially helpful). And we should be thanking those who help by providing sources - we are indeed here to help build an informative encyclopedia. Squinge (talk) 11:29, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Importance of Kannada and Marathi

Instead of arguing over ill treatment given to Kannada content, we can include notable Kannadigas in Solapur and nearby by giving proper references or any cultural event flourishing Kannada and Marathi heritage in Solapur, If any one tries to vandalize the page by deleting Kannada reference content, we can protect the page by restricting its access to only the admins

GA nomination

[edit]

Hello User:Dongar Kathorekar! The article lacks on many aspects to become a GA. The review would be quick fail given poor quality references and unsourced sections. It better if you revert your nomination and put more efforts in cleaning and then maybe try again later. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 10:53, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The article is nowhere near GA standards. At this stage, it would probably fail the review outright. I suggest a withdrawal, and some teamwork to get it up to standards. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:48, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Notable and prominent

[edit]

Although B.S. Kulkarni is notable and prominent, the Great Indian bustard, Ardeotis nigriceps, was described as long ago as 1831, by Nicholas Aylward Vigors.
