The 1753 Census of Trinity Bay showed five men living on Fox Island and another three in "Harts Eas". Could the former be Fox Harbour Island/Southport? Is so then this would indicate an earlier date of settlement, by 80 years.

Searching for Fox Island online does bring up another place in Newfoundland with the same name, but not in Trinity Bay, so it is possible that Fox Island is supposed to be Fox Harbour Island, which was later renamed to Southport. I should have noticed that on the website that you mentioned as I have been working on something with them for a little while now.
