I found this web page regarding the founder of the village of Wilkesport Ontario: http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/people/wilkes_cr.shtml —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.248.189.35 (talk) 03:27, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hicks/Beresford

[edit]

This seems to mean two people – Lord Hicks and Lord Beresford. I cannot identify either. William Beresford, 1st Viscount Beresford fought in Portugal and Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. However, he did not serve under Sir John Moore and he was not at the Battle of Corunna – he was in Portugal, training its army. Nor does there seem any evidence that he was ever in Canada. In 1823, he was transferred as Colonel between two regiments, neither of which was stationed in Canada. None of the other children of George Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford seems to have been associated with Canada either. This is definitely a case of {{citation needed}}. The "Hicks/Beresford" text was inserted in Sept 2017 by Parkwells (talk · contribs) . Perhaps s/he can consult whatever reference s/he used for this text (no citation was provided, which is disconcerting) to help determine the Lord (or Lords) in question. PKT(alk) 18:04, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I was trying to sort out a reference to Beresford in the text of the article - none of the material about Hicks/Beresford was sourced. So I was trying to find a Beresford who seemed to be in service at that time, and intended to do more research. Thanks for your comments. Have changed back to the previous editor's work, unsourced as it is, as I can't figure it out. Marked as needing source and disambiguation.Parkwells (talk) 14:31, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Finally found other material that ID'd Lord Hicks and William Carr Beresford. Two different expeditions had been referred to as one in the St. Clair area. Will add more references.Parkwells (talk) 15:47, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
