  • ... that in 1826 Jack Russell (after whom the terrier is named) was so upset by the impending loss of the Staghound breed in England that he purchased three hounds, hoping to somehow resurrect the breed? • ALT1:... that the last pack of Staghounds in England were those of the North Devon Hunt, which pursued stag in the Royal forests of Exmoor until 1825? Alderton, David. Hounds of the world. p. 78. & Morris, Desmond. Dogs: the ultimate dictionary of over 1,000 dog breeds. p. 61.
    • ALT2:... that prior to their 1825 sale, some of the Staghounds of the North Devon Hunt were acquired by enthusiasts in Devon including Parson John Froude, and it is thought that their bloodlines contributed to the development of the West Country Harrier? • General eligibility:

Policy compliance:

Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
  • Cited: Yes - Offline/paywalled citation accepted in good faith
  • Interesting: Yes
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: None required.

Overall: Article meets requirements for length, newness, and lack of copyvio. Assuming good faith for the offline, print sources cited (I can verify that they exist although Google Books previews are of limited utility). ALT0 was just over the hook length (206 characters vs 200), so I trimmed it down. Either ALT1 or ALT0 seem like they would work well. Very interesting article btw! BuySomeApples, many thanks for the review. ALT0 is probably my preferred but I would be happy with either. Kind regards, Cavalryman (talk) 18:16, 17 July 2021 (UTC).[reply]
ALT0 looks good, so let's go with that then! — Preceding unsigned comment added by BuySomeApples (talkcontribs) 20:38, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Cavalryman: I don't know if you'd be interested in a quirky slot, but would something like "Jack Russel actually bred Staghounds?" be an acceptable alt hook? Kingsif (talk) 18:31, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Kingsif: my only issue that is none of the sources cited indicate he actually bred from the hounds himself, the sources are not explicit but it is inferred he owned them for a period then passed them on to a friend who bred from them.
