Controversy
It's probably worth mentioning that Seagal's legitimacy as a martial artist frequently comes under question. This was a common topic in the days of USENET, both in MA in general, and within the online Aikido community (e.g. Aikido-L) in specific. From general googling it appears to me the question is still common.
- As a person who was involved in the very early days of both DARPANET, and USENET, I disagree that this topic was "common" at that time. In fact, I think you should provide proof of this assertion. The governing bodies of Akido have confirmed that Seagal is a recognized master of the art. It, therefore, falls to you to prove otherwise. (Jealous much?) fr33kman -simpleWP- 04:03, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
I mention this not to try to insert defamatory insinuations into a BLP, (personally I consider his real-world MA creds perfectly legitimate, as well as being a fairly separate issue from how "bad-ass" he is portrayed as being on screen) but rather to highlight that it is a frequent question regarding Seagal (and a question that has some quick and relevant answers for the interested reader). Flj529 (talk) 11:07, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
There's also a controversy over his harem. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20002440-504083.html What does BLP say? Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 19:59, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- BLP says we need good sources. But BLP also says: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid: it is not our job to be sensationalist...even if true, it is relevant to a disinterested article about the subject
- I think that the answer will be more clear in a year or so. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 20:04, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Very well said! :) fr33kman -simpleWP- 04:11, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Obesity
Segal suffers from obesity. I think we should mention this, guys. <redacted BLP violations> --86.169.54.219 (talk) 19:09, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- Well, to prove obesity, we'd need to know his BMI, and we don't. I agree that in recent episodes of Steven Seagal: Lawman it does appear that Mr. Seagal is packing a "few extra pounds". Remember, it's not what WE think that matters, it is what can be proved that matters to WP. :) All the best bra! fr33kman -simpleWP- 03:53, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Career as a martial artist
I think that a section needs to be created that deals with Steven's confirmed/purported careers as a martial artist. Surely, a 7th dan Akido master must have had some sort of career as a notable martial artist? And, I think that such a career (including descenting opinion) needs to be (re)added to the article? :) fr33kman -simpleWP- 03:58, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Louisiana or Tennessee?
The "Law enforcement work" section says "Seagal has a second home in Louisiana, and spends several months a year there" but the "Personal life" section puts him in California with a second home in Tennessee, and does not mention Louisiana at all. I checked Google News archives and there was no mention of "Steven Seagal" and either "Eads, Tennessee" or "Eads, TN" and so I removed this part. --Marc Kupper|talk 07:05, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Akido/ Anderson Silva
It says that Seagal is credited with teaching Silva the kick that KO'd Belfort at UFC 126, but here (http://mmajunkie.com/news/22367/silva-credits-seagal-for-ufc-126-win-eyes-brazil-or-las-vegas-for-gsp-showdown.mma) it says he helped him perfect it.
He obviously didn't teach him how to do a front kick. That's something Silva would know and he actually did the same kick against Dan Henderson three years ago.
I can't edit the article because it's semi-protected. For the sake of accuracy it'd be best to say he helped him perfect the kick. SixT-4 (talk) 19:02, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

See also... who???
The "See also" needs to be removed, as it's obviously a link added by a fan of whats-her-name and it has nothing to do with Steven Seagal. This is made obvious by the fact that nothing behind that link is about him! She is just one person who did a soundtrack to one series he is in. Between reports like this: http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/news/301728/Brazil-Report-Seagal-training-a-publicity-stunt/ and the fact that there is no record of Seagal ever having either trained in any of the major component martial arts to MMA or been in any of full-contact competition, I feel the claims about him having assisted various MMA fighters are too strongly worded. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Piyo314 (talk • contribs) 23:39, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

On the Steven Seagal page it is written that he is credited with teaching Anderson Silva the kick that won him the fight against Belfort at UFC 126. However recent articles suggest that it was a publicity stunt on behalf of Team Silva and his manager Jorge Joinha to have Seagal 'train' Silva for his fight... Recently Silva himself has admitted to the fact that Seagal did not teach him the kick but just gave him a little tip.
It will be highly appreciated if this information is posted because news like Seagal helped Silva win the fight will give people reading false information which is not something wikipedia is known for.
Thank you very much for your time.

What happened to the old discussion page ? The Main article is a fanboi whitewash !
The old discussion page was HUGE and hilarious (kind of like Segal's wig), but it seems it has been trashed. The main article seems much more Segal friendly and less neutral than it used to be. All references to him defecating his pants after being strangled by Gene LeBell (Joe Rogan even tells the story on his podcast) have been removed too, as have the other fascinating sections about him running away from a fight with JCVD (from a story by Van Damme himself). Him being called out by Randy Couture AND Bas Rutten, gone. And what about the section about Segal and the Mafia, where he cried and begged for mercy (which is fully documented on Crime.TV and elsewhere) ?? But it seems the whole main article is a complete whitewash now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.30.145.130 (talk) 16:20, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Friends, Please consider making the change discussed below.
Under the section titled Personal Life, the article states: "In February 1997, lama Penor Rinpoche from Palyul monastery announced that Seagal was a tulku, and specifically the reincarnation of Chungdrag Dorje, the founder of Nyingma, the oldest sect of Tibetan Buddhism."
I believe one part of the statement is incorrect: Although Nyingma is in fact the oldest sect of Tibetan Buddhism, its founder was not Chungdrag Dorje, but Padmasambhava. (Others were there at the founding as well—Shantaraksita, Vairotsana, Trisong Detsen, to name three of the most illustrious. But Chungdrag Dorje was not one of the principals.) In lama Penor Rinpoche's statement recognizing Steven Seagal as a reincarnation of Chungdrag Dorje, lama Penor places Chungdrag Dorje in a group of secondary tertons (revealers of treasures hidden in the 8th century by Padmasambhava). Here is a quotation from Penor's statement, which can be found at http://www.palyul.org/docs/statement.html
"In the Nyingma tradition it is said that there are a hundred main treasure revealers and an even greater number of secondary treasure revealers. Among the latter it is not uncommon for the line of their teachings to eventually lapse. Though they were beneficial during the time they flourished, for various reasons some tertön teaching lineages have ceased. This would seem to be the case with Chungdrag Dorje."
Proposed edit to the Steven Seagal article: "In February 1997, lama Penor Rinpoche from Palyul monastery announced that Seagal was a tulku, and specifically the reincarnation of Chungdrag Dorje, a 17th-century terton (treasure revealer) of the Nyingma, the oldest sect of Tibetan Buddhism."
Thank you for considering this, David Wolfersberger Santa Barbara, California

In other words, it needs an archive-url and archive-date like so.[1] --82.136.210.153 (talk) 22:36, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

In my opinion, it would be useful if the 2011 lawsuit section mentioned why the lawsuit got dismissed. My suggestion is to add, just before the last citation in aforementioned section, something along the lines of: "[...], because Llovera had failed to file court-ordered paperwork after his attorney had withdrawn from the case." --82.136.210.153 (talk) 10:28, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes, the citations 17 and 18 are innacurate. Steven Seagals father is not jewish, though he comes from Russia (Vladivostok). His mother is of indian mohawk descendant line. For actual reference watch the interview in youtube called "Veče sa Ivanom Ivanovićem - Gost: Stiven Sigal (04.12.2015)" from the 46th minute onward.Devilhope (talk) 01:20, 13 December 2015 (UTC)It saddens me to hear that he is a buddist, he nedds to read the real Bible and learn about Jesus or he will be condemned to spend eternity in Hell. I would not like that !!!!
A Serbian actor?? Seriously? Just because he was given a passport (for which he is also confused about) does not make him a Serbian actor. Clearly this is a bias. Ambiguous phrase
I'm not native English speaker. But when reading the following sentence:
In August, 2014, Seagal appeared at a Night Wolves-organized show in Sevastopol, Crimea, supporting the Crimean annexation and depicting Ukraine as a country controlled by fascists.[1][2]
… I was unsure whether Seagal was "supporting the Crimean annexation and depicting Ukraine as a country controlled by fascists" or the show itself was "supporting the Crimean annexation and depicting Ukraine as a country controlled by fascists". (Actually, at first look I supposed the former, but after reading references, I realized that the latter is true. Because the second ref describes Seagal's presence at the show and support for Russian POV in general, but not expressing explicitly his views on Crimean annexation and Ukraine; and the first ref doesn't mention Seagal at all.)
So, it there way to somehow rephrase the sentence to make it sound unambiguously? (Or is it ambiguous only for me, because I'm not a native speaker?) Sasha1024 (talk) 23:30, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Just inquiring just why Rex Tillerson was awarded Russia's "Order of Frienship" medal, when I noticed in the same listing that Steven Seagal has also been awarded it too. Steven Seagal's religious views
As we can see in different sources 1, 2, 3 and a lot of other, Steven Seagal also a priest of religion Oomoto-kyo. It's not contradict with his buddism belive, due the many shintoist also belive in other religion. So, may be usefull to add this information to the page ass well as add categories [[Category:Converts to Shinto]], and [[Category:American Shintoists]] (and, possibly, [[Category:Russian Shintoists]] and [[Category:Serbian Shintoists]]). 92.243.166.135 (talk) 11:57, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Biased Opening Line
The beginning of this article is highly biased.
"Steven Frederic Seagal[1] (born April 10, 1952)[2][3] is an actor, producer, screenwriter, director, martial artist, and musician who holds American, Russian, and Serbian citizenship that has frequently been accused of crimes of a sexual nature."
That statement that he has been accused of crime of a sexual nature shouldn't be in the opening line. It is okay to have it in the intro but it needs to be further down. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Roban160 (talk • contribs) 19:22, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

Remove: "Seagal moved to Japan at some point between the ages of 19 and 21 with his father who was visiting for military purposes, and met karate masters and decided to remain in Japan. He received his 1st dan degree (shodan) under the direction of Koichi Tohei. He continued to train in aikido as a student of Seiseki Abe, Tohei (whose aikido organization, Ki Society, Seagal refused to join in favor of staying with the Aikikai), Kisaburo Osawa, Hiroshi Isoyama and the second Dōshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba. He attained a 7th dan degree and Shihan in aikido, he also holds black belts in Karate, Judo and Kendo and became the first foreigner to operate an aikido dojo in Japan.[13]"
Source 13 states in fact that he was not the first foreigner to open a school in Japan. The rest of the paragraph is unsourced. Source 13 is mostly about Seagal's tendency to lie and/or embellish his past.
From the source: "While Seagal is often trumpeted as the first non-Asian to open a dojo in Japan, the school at which he taught belonged not to him but to Miyako’s family. She and her brother still teach there, and her mother is the chairwoman."
Regarding the rest of the offending paragraph, which references his time in Japan, the source tells us:
"Just when Seagal packed up and left for Japan is another confusing matter. During various interviews, he has indicated that it was anywhere from 1968 to 1973. According to enrollment records at Fullerton College, he attended classes there from the fall of 1970 and left after the fall of 1971, putting him at age 19 before he could have departed for a long stay in Japan. The date of his departure is only an issue because Seagal has claimed that he studied with Morihei Uyeshiba, the founder of aikido, who died in 1969. “That story is bull,” says Terry Dobson, a fifth-degree black belt who studied with the master from 1961 to 1969. “[Back then] I never heard of Steven Seagal.”
Whatever the course of his travels, by 1974 Seagal was back in California." 95.153.31.101 (talk) 03:59, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

First paragraph of the "Martial arts" section
The above edit request challenges claims made in the "Martial arts" section, particularly in the first paragraph. The only cite given for the many claims in that paragraph is one 1990 People profile that makes it clear that taking many of Segal's statements about his life at face value is questionable. Rather than making the one change requested by the IP editor above, I suggest that the entire paragraph should be replaced with text such as: "Seagal's early involvement in martial arts began during a stay in Japan but details have remained disputed." and cited to the same source. Are there objections to this change? Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 17:07, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

A review of his book (source)
In case anyone wants to add mention of his new book, here's a notable review of it: I Read Steven Seagal’s Insane Novel So You Don’t Have To by Mark Hill - Cracked.com
Some selected quotes:
- "Seagal's collaborator, Tom Morrissey, writes like a thousand monkeys disassembled a thousand typewriters and then choked to death on the pieces."
- "If this book has a key flaw, it's that it's the literary equivalent of getting punched in the kidneys by someone who isn't Steven Seagal."
- "This book may be written like Microsoft Word came to life and immediately started begging for death,"
I'd have added an additional, more serious review except there aren't any. Well, the AV Club has written about the book, but not actually reviewed it. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 23:10, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Problem/error in current source ref #21
Hello,
The current source ref #21 (in left-most references column) is not shown well in the references, and causes the text show up as:

Back Bay Books. p. 386. Archived at Google Books. Retrieved October 29, 2015.
and additionally, also bleeds over into/through the middle references colum (from the left-most references column) of the references. The wikisource code associated with this reference (or the wikisource code of that reference) is as follows:
- <ref name=LiveFromNewYork>Miller, James Andrew; Shales, Tom (October 6, 2015). Neither another wikipedian, nor myself have been able to ascertain the cause of the error. It it also quite possible that the target url to Google Books no longer points to the intended section.
Hopefully someone else will be able to find the root cause of this problem and/or repair the reference. Best regards, Martix (talk) 22:42, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

- @The Banner:: Thanks mate - I still don't understand why the initial reference & link as it was constructed didn't work, as it seemed to comply with the wiki source rules for external links (and usage in references).. But I guess it's the result that counts . 2018 Allegation - Timewarp?
I believe there is an error/problem in how the sentence(s) in this paragraph are formulated:
“ | On January 15, 2018, actress Rachel Grant publicly made a sexual assault allegation against Seagal, claiming an incident took place in 2002, during pre-production on his direct-to-video film, Out for a Kill (2003). She subsequently did not appear in the film. | ” |
Although English is not my native language, I consider myself to be a near-native speaker/writer. And as I read the quoted paragraph above, I believe it cannot be interpreted differently than:
- In 2018, actress Rachel Grant made a public allegation, implying Seagal sexually harassed her during the production of a movie in 2002;
- As a result of this allegation, she was edited out of the movie in 2003 (presumably by a clear voyant movie editor, or someone in 2018 traveling back in time to the year 2002/2003) to get her edited out of the movie which was released in 2003.
Probably – or very likely – the referenced sources correctly report the proper cause & effect on the time line, but as the paragraph in the article is written now is an impossible order of events with the technology known to man today.
Would anyone be able to point out the error in my interpretation/reasoning, or otherwise fix/correct the reported facts as they happened over time (and in the correct order? (My best guess is that she (Rachel Grant) was already edited out of the movie as she already caused some stir/made said allegations earlier during (post-)production in 2002/2003, causing her to be cut out of the movie (without the allegations being made public), and she then repeated the allegations (or made them public) in 2018 – presumably fueled by the #metoo 'campaign'/flood of confessions and announcements ?
Thanks & best regards - Martix (talk) 22:16, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
- I read it as: Grant came with a complaint in 2002, got thrown out of the movie that was launched in 2003, was holding a grudge for years and started backstabbing in 2018. The Banner talk 22:23, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi The Banner, that is indeed the most logical order of events (and matches "my guess" as elaborated at the end of my comment above), but that is not the order in which the events are formulated in the section. Specifically the word "subsequently" suggests her not appearing in the movie was a result of the public allegation in 2018 (or at most, that the allegation was true, hence subsequently nor appearing in the movie). At the very least, it's formulated ambiguously, with any ambiguity only eliminated by what is physically possible; the ambiguity is not 'fixed' linguistically? - Martix (talk) 22:31, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
- I get what you're saying. I read the source, and Grant claims that she lost her job on the film after the incident. I can see where the Wikipedia text could be read as, either, that she was edited out of the film (either after the incident or, somehow, retroactively, after making the accusation), or that she was never hired for the film. I didn't even anticipate the possibility of what I actually read in the source, that she was let go from the film during production. I edited the article to reflect the source. --DavidK93 (talk) 14:54, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
