What was the eponymous stump house?

[edit]

What was the Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel named for? Is there a Stumphouse Mountain, Stump House Mountain, or maybe Stump-House Mountain? Was that named for a specific stumphouse, stump-house, or stump house? awkwafaba (📥) 15:57, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

According to the South Carolina Encyclopedia (2006), the name “Stump House” originated in the legend of a Cherokee woman and her white husband who, ejected by both their respective communities, were said to have lived on the mountain in a log house built on top of stumps.https://charlestoncurrents.com/2018/01/history-stumphouse-mountain-tunnel/ John Foxe (talk) 00:31, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
