This needs better sourcing. Did South Korea officially acknowledged any mistrial or that the charges were false? This sympathetic South Korean newspaper article [1] suggests that "So far, 32 ethnic Koreans have been exonerated after wrongful convictions in the 70s and 80s through retrials while eight are still awaiting the results. There are at least 319 confirmed similar cases according to data from a fact-finding committee of the Ministry of National Defense." but while it mentions Sung it does not make it clear if he has been exonerated already or was/is still waiting for a retrial.
