Pronunciation
[edit]Can someone please explain the proper pronunciation of Sur La Table within the article? Sur la tahb, etc.? jengod 19:33, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- That's a good question. I've never seen a source on it, and it's really an English-language use of a French phrase, so I tend to hear sur la tahb. But I don't know if the company has an official stance. -- Scarequotes 19:41, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
Internally they use the proper French pronunciation (as outlined above). Some customers pronounce it that way, others pronounce it "'sir lah tah-bleh, while others pronounce it "sir lah tay-bull". They don't 'correct' the various pronunciations; as noted it's a French phrase used in the U.S., and they're not snobs about it.
Sur La Table does not have an official stance on the pronunciation of its name but employees are more than happy to help customers learn the proper pronunciation. In fact, Sur La Table employee's most frequently asked question may well be “how do you pronounce your name and what does it mean?” /sir lah taab-leh/ French for “on the table”.

Early history?
[edit]The "History" section of this article has one sentence set in 1972. The next sentence is in 1995, and the sentence after that is in 2005. Thirty-three years in three sentences, while there are three paragraphs about 2020. There needs to be more about the first three decades of this company's existence (preferably not parroted from its website). --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 15:08, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
