Differentiate NZ challenges before formation of TNZ itself

[edit]

If memory serves, Sir Michael Fay's challenges were not under the banner of TNZ (although I think at least one was on behalf of RNZYS). IIRC, Team New Zealand itself was not formed as a distinct entity until Sir Peter's 1995 challenge.

However I have no citable information regarding this at hand.

I cannot think of Team New Zealand without thinking of Sir Peter Blake, whose approach to winning the America's Cup for New Zealand was so different than Michael Fay's various challenges. The surprise challenge of 1988 that relied on the legal wording of the Deed of Gift in an attempt to dictate time and terms is not at all like that of Peter Blake's, whose Team New Zealand was characterized by teamwork and sportsmanship. I agree with the above writer. In my opinion, though the Fay sponsored challenges were the beginning of New Zealanders being involved in the America's Cup, they are misplaced on this page on Team New Zealand. Suggested page rename and expanded scope

[edit]

Consistent with the suggestion at Wikipedia:New_Zealand_Wikipedians'_notice_board#NZ_at_the_America's_Cup, I would like to move this page to New Zealand at the America's Cup. This would make it consistent with Italy at the America's Cup. This would also enable this page to include content relating to NewZealanders who sailed for other teams, the 1988 America's Cup and KZ1, and the current 2021 edition.
Any objections? Wittylama 16:59, 19 January 2021 (UTC) I think it would be useful to have both-- an overall article about New Zealand participation in the event across all teams and this article about Team New Zealand itself as an institution. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.116.215.42 (talk) 08:48, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
