Fair use rationale for Image:Original movie poster for the film The Long Voyage Home.jpg
[edit]Image:Original movie poster for the film The Long Voyage Home.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 03:57, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Uncredited cast members (in order of appearance)
[edit]As confirmed by the American Film Institute Catalog entry for The Long Voyage Home, the following seven blue-linked performers have uncredited speaking bit parts in the film which features their appearances in the following order:
- Wyndham Standing..........British naval officer
- Blue Washington..........Black cook on Glencairn
- Billy Bevan..........Joe, limehouse barman
- Lionel Pape..........Mr. Clifton
- James Flavin..........Dock policeman
- Lee Shumway..........Dock policeman
- Harry Woods..........Amindra First Mate
- The easiest way I find to determine who belongs in the cast list is by limiting it to people directly mentioned in the plot. If they have no impact on the plot, why are they in the cast list? However, if you have a source for the uncredited members, that's enough to pass the low bar of WP:V. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 05:56, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
- Inevitably, the one section of every film article that qualifies, to a degree, as WP:ORIGINALRESEARCH is "Plot", which is assembled from personal viewing of the film in question. A secondary method is to read about the film and then summarize the plot in one's own words without actually seeing the film. Ultimately, however, numerous film articles contain only a few sentences providing a general outline of the plot or have no content under "Plot".
- The same personal creation method applies to character names when many films, including major ones, such as To Kill a Mockingbird, do not provide cast lists with character names, thus leaving editors to indicate such names either from personal viewing of the film or by copying the character names provided by reliable sources such as the American Film Institute Catalog, without actually viewing the film.
- Furthermore, a glance at a cross-section of Wikipedia "Plot" write-ups will quickly confirm that very few editors of plot sections designed the content to include and describe all characters or even all of the top-billed characters. The Long Voyage Home has an admirably extensive "Plot" write-up and yet the only identifiable characters mentioned are top-5-billed Olsen, Driscoll, Smitty, Cocky and Captain, plus 8th-billed Yank and 10th-billed Davis.
- Thus, out of the 21 actor and character names indicated in the on-screen closing credits crawl, only 7 were mentioned in Wikipedia's plot section. Should only the names of those seven actors appear in the cast list to the exclusion of the actors who were billed 6th, 7th, 9th, 11th and all the others whose names appear in the credits crawl?
- As for the uncredited cast members, only the seven actors who already had Wikipedia articles were submitted for inclusion under "Cast", thus enabling the title The Long Voyage Home to be seen when Wikipedia users click under "What links here" in each of those uncredited actors' respective articles. As matters stand now, this title will appear under "What links here" not as The Long Voyage Home, but as Talk:The Long Voyage Home.
- It should be also noted that each of these seven uncredited cast members is a veteran character actor who has had roles in scores or even hundreds of films and is easily recognizable to those who are familiar with films of that era. They are listed in order of appearance and, if need be, timing can be added to each of their names so that the exact moment of their dialogue delivery can be pinpointed.
