Criterion Channel notes

[edit]

This movie was available on the Criterion Channel streaming service in 2019, until August 31.

A card for "Sony Pictures Television" comes up at the end.

Its description erroneously(?) indicates that it was titled "The Cardinal" :

Unfolding in an unnamed Eastern European country after World War II, THE CARDINAL is a stripped-down struggle of wills between two archetypal characters. The Cardinal (Alec Guinness) has been arrested and, charged with a series of phony crimes, is subjected to intense questioning by the Interrogator (Jack Hawkins), a man who was once his friend and ally in the struggle against the Nazi occupation. Knowing that the Cardinal won’t break under torture or confinement, the Interrogator searches for a way to elicit a confession from his antagonist.
