User:Ghirlandajo insists on removing the following text: "It suffered from Russian ravaging: in May 1720 it was burnt down, and at the close of the Finnish War in 1809 the Russian army under Barclay de Tolly took Umeå."
But now you know. / Fred-Chess 17:05, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- Chess, you behavior is immature. Instead of expanding the article to present all POVs, I see you red-faced and in hysterics. Please cool off. A similar behaviour by Wiglaf induced me to start reviewing his contributions to Russia-related articles and beyond. Now your nervous reaction makes me think about reviewing the articles on Swedish agressions against Russia as well. --Ghirla | talk 17:12, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- I have changed "Russian ravaging" to "Russian attacks", which seems more neutral. Fred, you need to give your source for the sentence you've added. Please supply it in the references section and put an inline reference where the statement is, as either a footnote, or a parenthesis of the form (see Svensson, p. 87). Ghirlandajo, you need to not be so rude. Your edit summaries and your post above contain personal attacks. What's it got to do with 18th-century history that Fred's up for admin? Comment on the content, not the contributor, please. I'm surprised to see you use words like "immature", "red-faced", and "hysterics" about a disagreement over a matter of fact. I also note that your latest edit summary accuses Fred of "rv warring" at a point where he has reverted once and you twice. Please pull in your horns. Bishonen | talk 19:06, 7 February 2006 (UTC).
Population
[edit]The municipality's population is about 110,000, but the city proper has 75,000 inh. Don't get them mixed up! --Muniswede 19:15, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- Someone returns every now and then, putting the municipal population into the this article. Please learn the difference before editing. --Muniswede 22:34, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
- Please learn that in Sweden the municipalities are mostly greater areas including many localities. There are 20 localities in Umeå Municipality, one of them being Umeå! --Muniswede (talk) 06:57, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
- This is still relevant as of November 2017 – might seem like nitpicking, but population numbers are off by almost 30.000 as of current. Statistics Sweden (a government agency) report 83 249 inhabitants in the town proper ("tätort") as of 2015: http://www.scb.se/Statistik/MI/MI0810/2015A01/MI0810_2015A01_SM_MI38SM1601.pdf (on page 10). 122 892 is the number for the municipality, with a total area of 2 397,61 km², including islands in the Baltic! Whilst current statistics discount a few smaller localities (Holmsund, Obbola, Tomtebo, Röbäck, Ersmark) within the urban area of Umeå proper, is no definition of "urban area" used in Swedish population statistics, and therefore the number for the locality of Umeå should be used. – DeadTVsky (talk) 22:44, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- Went ahead and changed, added new sources. Tried to be more consistent with other Swedish cities and towns. Area, population and density are now consistent with urban area/locality ("tätort) as defined by Statistics Sweden (for example, see Uppsala) while the styling of the infobox might still be somewhat inconsistent. I have removed the misleading "Metro" population post in the infobox, which just contained the municipal population, which still can bee glanced from the lead section, or found in the relevant article.
- Sorry about the messy multiple edits – it's been ages since I did this. I am watching this page so tell me if there is anything you want to correct, amend or change. DeadTVsky (talk) 01:25, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
Coats of Arms
[edit]The CoA should not be here. It is the CoA for Umeå Municipality, not just for its seat.. Don't ge them mixed up! --Muniswede 18:31, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Demographics
[edit]There seems to be some confusion as to what the term "demographics" means. I have commented out the map labelled "demographics" which was placed in the middle of the section on "economy" and I restored the position of the commented out section to the place where "demographics" originally was placed before its deletion on 9 September 2007 by Muniswede. It is debatable whether a section on demographics is useful to the article so I have also added the previously deleted section to the part I commented out. If it is decided that we don't want a "demographics" section then the whole comment should be removed. As far as the map incorrectly labelled "demographics" is concerned, it also seems potentially useful so I didn't want to delete it entirely. If we want to keep it we should certainly include it in a different area of teh article as it does NOT belong under "demographics." It seems to be a bit buggy as well. Something about its formatting seems to screw up the "famous people" section for some reason.
Anyway, to make a long story short, for the commented out bit (between "Infrastructure" and "Culture") it must be decided if:
(1) The map should be redistributed to another section (perhaps Location under Geography) or deleted, and
(2) The section on demographics should be restored or deleted Thibbs 00:07, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
Climate data - source?
[edit]The climate table in the article need a verifiable source. Umeå warmer than Copenhagen and London in summer? And not much colder than Stockholm in winter? This link here gives a January average of -10C and a July average of about 15C. Orcaborealis 18:38, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps the temperatures listed are average daily maxima? Either way, clarification would still be needed. Joost (talk) 20:14, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
The worldclimate link uses data from the latest 1990, which is old enough to be potentially deprecated with global warming. A quick google showed the last few years to be at least 3-4 degrees warmer than the WC data. Eudoxie (talk) 19:55, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
johan edlund
[edit]- does johan edlund really count as a famous people from umeå?'cos here it says he is from Södertälje[1]--Infestor (talk) 18:06, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Sara Lidman
[edit]- Is not a notable person from Umeå. She just lived there a couple of years until her death. She was brought up in Missenträsk, studied in Uppsala, traveled a lot in Africa, moved back to Missenträsk in the seventies until she moved to Umeå around 1996-2000 something.
Stieg Larsson
[edit]- It's notable that Stieg was brought upp in Måggliden outside Norsjö. He moved to Umeå at the age of 8,5 years. At 19-20 he moved to Stockholm. I think he's both a son of Umeå and Måggliden, Norsjö, not just a son of Umeå.
Veganism
[edit]Veganism has become more common in Sweden over the last fifteen years, so I would question how relevant a study from 1996 is, both from a contemporary and historical perspective: that Umeå seemed to have more vegan students than other Swedish cities at a certain point in time is probably not encyclopedic material. /Julle (talk) 05:40, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
