Recent moves

[edit]

As a result of recent activity with the this article, the history was split in two; I've now merged the histories back together, and all edits are within the history of this article. I haven't performed the move that was requested to The University of Virginia's College at Wise, however, because that seems inconsistent with our article University of Virginia, and because there was no discussion on this talk page. Please provide rationale here and list at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Thank you. Chick Bowen 16:15, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed data that was flat out incorrect with non-reliable sources (e.g. dead links). — Preceding unsigned comment added by War Machine Alpha (talkcontribs) 22:52, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Acceptance rate at UVA Wise

[edit]

Is it just as difficult to get to UVA Wise as it is UVA itself? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sabinal (talkcontribs) 14:25, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Athletics section needs changing.

[edit]

On the athletics section, it still says that UVA-Wise competes in the NAIA's Mid South Conference, when as of 2013-14 they compete in NCAA Division II's Mountain East Conference. Also, I am not sure that both the G-MAC and Mid-South Conference navigation boxes (the boxes on the bottom of the page) are necessary any more since the college is now in the Mountain East Conference.Cgriff94 (talk) 18:55, 21 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fall 2016 Enrollment Numbers: SCHEV or UVA-Wise presentation?

[edit]

I'm having difficulty deciding which enrollment number I should put in the infobox. Should I put in the enrollment number that SCHEV has, which is what is currently on the infobox, or should I put in the UVA-Wise presentation enrollment number, which was what used to be on the infobox? The two numbers are inconsistent with each other and I am asking for input on whether it should be kept as the SCHEV number or it should be changed to the UVA-Wise presentation number.

Here is the presentation that I am referring to: http://www.virginia.edu/bov/meetings/'16%20SEP/UVa-Wise%202016%2009%2016%20FINAL.pdf And here is the SCHEV report that I am also referring to: http://research.schev.edu/enrollment/E2_Report.asp

Hey @Whispertome, This college does have faculty housing, per the question in your edit summary. Why do you ask? Let me know if I can be of further help! JuxtaposedJacob (talk) 21:03, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging @WhisperToMe JuxtaposedJacob (talk) 21:05, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JuxtaposedJacob: Thanks for the ping! In articles about smaller municipalities/census-designated places and neighborhoods of large cities I typically determine what K-12 schools are assigned to cover the municipality/CDP/neighborhood. A source stating that there will be faculty housing would be good for the next sentence. Then, on would cite attendance boundary maps of Wise County Public Schools to determine which schools cover the University of Virginia's College at Wise CDP. I did a search of the website, but unfortunately I haven't located a boundary map published on the school district's website. If a published one is located, that would be helpful! Hey,
Can't find anything on either the school attendance zones or a UVA Wise published source saying that they had faculty housing. If I see something in the future I will add it, but am not going to make this my top priority.
Thanks!

Hey @WhisperToMe,
Found a source!!!
The University of Virginia visitor map has data specifically showing that, on the west side of central campus, there is faculty housing!
Let me know if you want me to add the information; I think you ought to do it because you seem more experienced in CDP stuff.

Look up "UVACW" in the search bar to quickly jump to the campus. JuxtaposedJacob (talk) | :) | 05:28, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JuxtaposedJacob: Thank you! I didnt see the faculty housing on the web view map nor on the PDF map, but I did find evidence in a list of buildings in a PDF file (page 21). Now I will consult the school division site to see if it has attendance boundary maps and/or if it has attendance zones by subdivision. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:08, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like a better source than my map.
Thanks! JuxtaposedJacob (talk) | :) | 19:11, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! The last step would be to find a published school district attendance zone document, but sadly I haven't found it yet. If I find attendance maps one can check them against the university location. If it publishes lists by subdivision, it should list the university as its own subdivision. @Glman: Hi! There was an existing discussion which is about this housing.

My belief is that if a university has special housing for faculty, the article should say so, even if secondary sources have not necessarily documented the family housing (not all universities offer faculty housing, and in fact the main University of Virginia discontinued its own faculty housing). While the article should mostly rely on secondary sourcing, not all pieces of information must come from secondary sourcing. Notability is generally not a standard used to affect the content of an article Wikipedia:Notability#Notability_guidelines_do_not_apply_to_content_within_articles_or_lists

Anyhow, the real reason why I brought it up is then it would justify explaining which public schools that the university is zoned to (as the dependent children living in said faculty housing would be assigned to those schools). A common practice for Wikpedia articles on city neighborhoods and smaller municipalities/CDPs is to document the public schools the community is assigned to. This is a census-designated place, and so it is standard to add the relevant school district information. There is a possibility that no dependent children live in a territory (and so mentioning specific schools would not be relevant, but the school district is still relevant as the adult residents and businesses pay taxes to the school district), but if it has faculty housing, then there is the possibility of dependent children, which means the exact K-12 school information becomes relevant to the "University of Virginia's College at Wise" census-designated place.

One last thing: I also wanted to make sure dates are in MDY (month first) order (WP:ENGVAR). Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 01:34, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
