Personal Life Error Correction - Possible Bot Involvement
[edit]Hi to all fellow Wikipedians interested in Valerie Carter.
At the top of the Personal Life section, someone anonymously added: "On November 26, 1999, in Montclair, New Jersey, she married Seth Katz, a television executive with Sony.[14]"
According to her close friends and family (and Seth Katz too), this assertion of a marriage to Seth Katz is false. The Billboard report is false.
Attempts to delete the false statement results in the statement being re-entered. There may be a bot that monitors it and does the re-entry.
Since we can't delete it, I've added a disclaimer/correction statement after it.
Thanks for reading! — Preceding unsigned comment added by LenMinNJ (talk • contribs)
- Most people on Wikipedia are anonymous, including yourself. The person who added the marriage bit was RC5 in November 2019. That was the final edit of RC5.
- The challenge you are facing is that the magazine Billboard published news of the marriage in December 1999. Here's a link to a PDF scan of the page. The item is at the lower left corner. So what prompted the magazine to publish this item if it wasn't an actual wedding? Binksternet (talk) 19:02, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
Requesting changes to Valerie Carter Page
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
1. Under BIOGRAPHY
Remove Midnight Over Honey River in last sentence. (This is a bootleg album that we went to court over and just received the final judgement in our favor and would like to get it removed.)
2. Under OTHER WORK:
Replace last paragraph with:
In 2018 her friend, Kathy Kurasch, and her sister, Jan Carter, formed Cowboy Angel Records to release the first posthumous stand-alone album of previously unreleased material by Carter. It includes unreleased tracks recorded during her career, including "I Got Over It", co-written by Prince.[7] In 2022 they released The Lost Tapes Vol 2. (reference: https://www.discogs.com/master/2613353-Valerie-Carter-The-Lost-Tapes-Vol2)
3. Under DISCOGRAPHY STUDIO ALBUMS:
Remove Midnight Over Honey River Add The Lost Tapes Vol 2 (2022)
Also one other thing that needs to be removed:
4. Under Personal Life and Death
Remove the first paragraph under Personal Life and Death about the marriage to Seth Katz. This was incorrectly published by Billboard. No marriage ever took place and it needs to be removed. Billboard was contacted but because it was so far back nothing could be done to retract it
OohChild (talk) 17:56, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- In regard to number 2. It is an improvement because they way it reads now it sounds like Kathy Kurasch is Jan Carter's friend as opposed to Valerie Carter's friend.
- Regarding #3: The footnote would be acceptable as I understand this is still a release even if it is a bootleg. It just needs to state (in whatever words) that it was not an official album by Valerie Carter and was released without her permission. You can even add, if necessary, that the Valerie Carter estate sued over this and won. If you need a copy of the lawsuit and judgement I have it. OohChild (talk) 18:09, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- A link of some kind to the judgement would be great, if that's possible! Tollens (talk) 18:11, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Unfortunately there isn't a direct link other than going to https://courtrecords.lakecountyclerk.org/showcaseweb/#!/ and doing a case search under the last name of Halprin and then clicking on the first one and you will find the lawsuit. You can then click on dockets and you can read the docs which include the lawsuit and final judgement at end. The only other way I can source this is to submit the docs myself and I don't know if one can do that here. OohChild (talk) 18:16, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- I have marked the album with a footnote. Tollens (talk) 18:54, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Perfect. Thank you so much for your time today Tollens. OohChild (talk) 19:00, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

- I can make that change to the wording in #2 right now as well. Tollens (talk) 18:13, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Since the issue is just clarity, I've changed
her sister, Jan Carter, and her friend, Kathy Kurasch
toher sister, Jan Carter, and friend, Kathy Kurasch
as only swapping the two just makes it seem like Jan Carter is Kathy Kurasch's sister. Tollens (talk) 18:16, 21 June 2023 (UTC) - Thank you Tollens for your help on all this. It is greatly appreciated. OohChild (talk) 18:17, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

- @OohChild: I've now added The Lost Tapes Vol. 2 - the last thing with the reported marriage is a bit tricky. There is a scanned copy of the Billboard page reporting the marriage, provided as a reference in the article - why was this published (with a fair amount of detail) if this never occurred? Tollens (talk) 19:22, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- We don't know why this was ever published. I asked Seth Katz and he doesn't know either. It definitely never happened! Maybe a footnote can be added that this is disputed by the estate? OohChild (talk) 19:24, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Is there any sort of published statement anywhere that could be used to support that? Tollens (talk) 19:48, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, no. There is lack of evidence if that helps as in no marriage certificate on record anywhere. Seth was a good friend of Valerie's and if it has to stay up there's nothing we can do. This isn't something Valerie would mind, all that much, it's more for fans and/or any music historians documenting her life as it is simply not correct and we would like only accurate information out there. OohChild (talk) 19:53, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- I'm really not sure on this one. With an apparently reliable source stating that the marriage did happen and no statement of any form to the contrary, there's no good way for me to deal with the issue. I'll add an inline disputed tag after the statement - this will let readers know that the claim is disputed, and perhaps others may be able to provide further information. Tollens (talk) 20:04, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Perfect. Thank you. OohChild (talk) 20:05, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- This is actually her full list of credits as a guest vocalist:

- I also wanted to ask you - there are several credits missing under her discography. When I prepare a list of those do I just open a new discussion here requesting additions? OohChild (talk) 20:08, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yep! You can use the same edit request template you used previously to add it to the list of requested edits, or ping me using
{{ping|Tollens}}
and I'll see it. Tollens (talk) 20:11, 21 June 2023 (UTC)- There's the complete list. It's a lot. If you need me to go though it and only list the ones that are not listed on Wikipedia now I can do that and ping you later. OohChild (talk) 20:14, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- That would be perfect - thanks! Tollens (talk) 20:18, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Will do. Thank you Tollens! OohChild (talk) 20:18, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Here are the additions and all our official releases that can be found on discogs if they need sourcing:

- OohChild (talk) 20:42, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Is this the full list that aren't already in the article? Tollens (talk) 20:51, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, that is correct. These need to be added. OohChild (talk) 20:52, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- @OohChild: I'm missing some information for a couple: I can't seem to verify that they worked on Cher's Love Hurts or Warren Zevon's Back In the High Life, I can't even find an album by Marty Ballin titled Blue Mountain, and I'm wondering where in the article Baby It's You belongs? Otherwise I'll add the rest of those in. Tollens (talk) 22:12, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Here is Warren Zevon https://www.discogs.com/release/2443338-Warren-Zevon-Back-In-The-High-Life OohChild (talk) 22:22, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Ah - their name is misspelled in that one so that's probably why it didn't come up. Tollens (talk) 23:16, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry - it's Marty Ballin's Blue Highway 2010 https://www.discogs.com/release/13777217-Marty-Balin-Blue-Highway OohChild (talk) 22:25, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- As I recall Valerie and Kate Markowitz went uncredited on Cher so you can leave that off. Also, Baby It's You is a 7" vinyl only and is a Japanese release on Hyabusa Landings. You may also leave that off if that's easier - no problem. OohChild (talk) 22:28, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

- @OohChild: Alright - I think everything's done. I've marked your edit request as resolved - if there's anything I've missed or done incorrectly please do let me know! Tollens (talk) 04:45, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- You have worked very hard on this and I appreciate it so much can't thank you enough. OohChild (talk) 04:58, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Requesting assistance
[edit]I would like to make and addition to the Valerie Carter page and am not sure if I am supposed to as it may be considered a conflict of interest. OohChild (talk) 17:12, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi! You can propose anything here. When one sees it's a reasonable update, they will implement it. Wpn2022 (talk) 20:06, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Requesting assistance with Valerie Carter page
[edit]- This is what I could like to add at the end of her Biography or in Other Works:
In 2024 the Valerie Carter estate and Faragher Brothers joined forces and recreated the Faragher Brothers "Never Get Your Love Behind Me" and "What My Baby Needs Now" by James Brown as a special edition 7" vinyl
- This can be used as a source: https://ktla.com/business/press-releases/ein-presswire/687702927/valerie-carter-estate-and-faragher-brothers-join-forces-bringing-retro-soul-single-to-life/
- And then it should be added to her discography between Tom Snow and Vesica Pisces. It should read:
Valerie Carter and Faragher Brothers 2024
- I would also like to change the wording of the last paragraph in Other Works to this:
In 2018, Carter's long time friend, Kathy Kurasch, produced The Lost Tapes, the first posthumous stand-alone album of previously unreleased material by Carter. It includes unreleased tracks recorded during her career, including "I Got Over It", co-written by Prince. It was released on Cowboy Angel Records, an indy label formed by Kurasch and Valerie's sister, Jan Carter.
- The source would be: https://www.popmatters.com/valerie-carter-voice-of-angel-2628049329.html?fbclid=IwAR0WKk1sFFkEgdNJYyBs2cRd7A0Ccbw2KAi_8FXRzLVIk9U88aNXMPXW934
- And then:
In 2022 they released The Lost Tapes Vol. 2
- Source: https://www.discogs.com/release/23049914-Valerie-Carter-The-Lost-Tapes-Vol2
- The reason for this edit is it is more accurate and reads better.
- Thank you OohChild (talk) 22:15, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Done. Also, I thought it was appropriate to create a new Legacy section and put the new information there. And to move some of the information from the Biography and Other works sections, too, which relate to events that took place after her death. Wpn2022 (talk) 19:07, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- I can't thank you enough for doing this. That's perfect about the Legacy page. And you did it on the perfect day - the new single was officially released today! Thank you again and Happy Valentine's Day! OohChild (talk) 19:17, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- Happy Valentine's Day to you, too! Wpn2022 (talk) 19:20, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
