Article should be titled oculocephalic reflex
[edit]This article is completely wrong. They are discussing the oculocephalic reflex not the vestibulo-ocular reflex. The vestibulo-ocular reflex is test by flushing cold or warm water down the patients ears and seeing how the eyes deviate (thus it should only be done on unconscious patients). While the oculocephalic reflex does test cranial nerves 3-8, it is not called the vestibulo0ocular reflex. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.214.4.21 (talk) 15:48, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
- I second, this is about the oculocephalic reflex. Tinss (talk) 19:18, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- To what part are you referring? The reflex that automatically compensates the azimuth/elevation of the eye in response to movement of the skull (external to the eye, i.e. turning one's head 30° to the right while maintaining a fixed gaze on the same point) appears to be widely called the "Vestibulo-ocular Reflex" in the literature. I'm genuinely unfamiliar with the difference but perhaps the difference is in how the two are *tested*? (And perhaps what clinical indications/implications that the result of each has?) If so, perhaps more information in the "Clinical significance" section? Based on the term, as used, it doesn't appear that a rename would be appropriate. -- Jewell D D (talk) 01:47, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
merge w/ Vestibular system? (redundance)
[edit]There's another complete section about this topic - I don't think these two should co-exist. Torzsmokus 09:27, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose the merge. Corneal reflex, pupillary reflex, gag reflex and oculocephalic reflex stand on their own. I think the reflex can stand on its own and many people that are interested learning about the reflex don't have much interest in knowing the details of the vestibular system. The vestibular system article, IMHO, should be changed to have be like renal failure or dialysis -- with "main" article links, e.g. {{main|Vestibulo-ocular reflex}}.Nephron T|C 21:35, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose the merge. I feel the vestibular system and VOR can each have their own article. My vote would be to strip down the section on the VOR in the vestibular system page and use a main article link. --Selket 06:56, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Medial Longitudinal Fasciculus (MLF)
[edit]My sources tell me that the signal goes from the vestibular nuclei to the occulomotor nuclei via the MLF, and that this is the DIRECT pathway (as opposed to the indirect, which goes via the reticular activating system). Could someone clarify this please? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jkokavec (talk • contribs) 08:44, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
The figure is not correct. While the left semicircular canal would be inhibited by a right head turn, this inhibition would not lead to a "cascading" inhibition of contralateral abducens and oculomotor neurons. The inhibition comes from right semicircular canal collaterals EXCITING inhibitory interneuons in the ipsilateral MVN and LVN, which in turn inhibit motorneurons located in the ipsilateral abducens nucleus and oculomotor nucleus.
And this is an important reflex that definitely should be separate from the vestibular system. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.142.143.82 (talk) 23:34, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
What happens in zero-G?
[edit]What happens in zero-G? No gravity --> no signal from utricle; then what? 71.139.163.243 (talk) 22:47, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
