Irene Clennell

[edit]
  • ... that Irene Clennell was deported from the UK, despite having a British husband, because she had spent too long abroad? Source: "Over the last three decades, she has built a life in Britain. But because those years have been interspersed with extended periods in Singapore – first for five years in the '90s with her husband and two sons when John had a job out there, and later alone, caring for her dying parents and renting out her flat – she has become locked out of Britain’s immigration system." (link)
    • ALT1:... that when Irene Clennell was deported from the UK to Singapore, she was given only £12 and the clothes she was detained in? Source: "Irene’s been deported from the country with the clothes on her back, £12 in her pocket and nothing more and just left" (link)

  • @Smurrayinchester: I have reviewed this article. There is only one issue of note, and when it is resolved, I will pass this quite interesting nomination. epicgenius (talk) 23:58, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

@Epicgenius: Which phrases need to be changed? The only full sentences being highlighted by the copyvio detector are direct quotes. All the hits are marked as "Violation Unlikely". Smurrayinchester 07:40, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
@Smurrayinchester: The vast majority are either quotes or are names that can't be reworded. But the following phrases could be changed: leave to remain was denied; was picked up by news media; got a job as a receptionist at the Merchant Navy Hotel in Lancaster Gate; and Brian Paddick, the Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson. These are minor things, and I will pass the article once they are rephrased. epicgenius (talk) 13:52, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: Thanks. Have rewritten was picked up by news media and got a job as a receptionist at the Merchant Navy Hotel in Lancaster Gate. Have kept leave to remain was denied since this is a legal term of art and Brian Paddick, the Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson, because that's just his title (see Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesman). @Smurrayinchester: Thank you for your quick response. This is good to go. epicgenius (talk) 15:27, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but in reading the article I don't see a source for this statement: However, this status is voided if the holder spends more than two years outside the country. Do you have a source for that? Footnote 3, which is the cite for much of the information about the denial of a visa to Clennell, only says that the law requires a couple to live in the UK for long, uninterrupted stretches. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:24, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah: Reference 3 does cite it ("Between 2003 and 2004 she put in four separate applications for leave to remain and they were all rejected because she had been out of the country for more than two years, invalidating her earlier leave to remain.") However, Reference 2 is more explicit ("she had no idea that, despite her marriage, there were restrictions on the amount of time she could spend out of the UK. The time limit is actually two years."), so I've added that in. Thanks for checking! Smurrayinchester 08:05, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
  • @Smurrayinchester: thank you, that ref is much more to the point. Restoring tick per epicgenius's review. Yoninah (talk) 16:03, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
