Usage

[edit]

This template is used to create an infobox for a Tartan pattern. These patterns are recorded by several registries, and may have legal status both by copyright and explicit legal restrictions on their use. Images of these tartans may be restricted to WP:Fair Use guidelines.

{{Infobox tartan
| name = Tartan name (if different from page name). Do not include the word "tartan".
| image = Image of the tartan pattern. With the userscript, this will be able to be populated automatically with an image generated directly from the specified sett pattern.
| style = Tartan color palate. Defaults to "modern" with default image caption.
| caption1 = Caption for main image. Defaults to "The <name> tartan in <style> colors."
| sett = The sett pattern
| image2 = Picture of the tartan in use
| caption2 = Caption for image2
| image3 = Other pictures of the tartan
| caption3 = Caption for image3
| image4 = Other pictures of the tartan
| caption4 = Caption for image4
| STA = Scottish Tartans Authority reference number
| STWR = Scottish Tartans World Registry reference number
| SRTref = Reference number for tartan entry in The Scottish Register of Tartans
}}

Both the STA and STWR reference numbers can be found at The Scottish Register of Tartans. Thread counts for the sett can also be accessed on a limited basis from the Scottish Register of Tartans with a free account.

A userscript is being created to allow a tartan pattern image to be created from the provided sett pattern and displayed as the default main image of the tartan. Until the userscript is ready, the template is still functional as an infobox, but it will lack its intended full functionality.

Tartan pattern sett description

[edit]

The Infobox tartan template defines a parameter sett= for specifying the thread count of the tartan pattern. This sett description uses single letter tartan color codes followed by a number indicating the number of threads wide at that color. Most colors have a separate code for a lighter or darker shade of the primary color, and the exact color tone of any color code (including some user-defined codes) can be specified. The table of basic colors is below, with the light and dark versions grouped with their basic color counterpart.

^ The traditional code for brown in tartan patterns is "T" as a mnemonic for "Tan", with "LT" (light brown) for actual tan colors.

Thread counts

[edit]

Once you have the colors of your tartan pattern, the second part of defining the sett is specifying the size of the stripes in each color. This is done by adding a number after each letter describing the number of threads in each color stripe. Add these alternating Letter+Number codes to get the tartan sett. Most tartans are symmetrical, and the first and last color stripes are referred to as "pivots" where the pattern doubles back on itself. When specifying a sett, only specify thread counts from one pivot to the next, inclusive. The two pivot points should include the full count of the stripe - the pivots do not double back on themselves. To indicate an asymmetric tartan that goes immediately back to the beginning of the sett after reaching the end instead of doubling back, place a "+" plus sign at the beginning of your sett pattern.
