Films "directed" by Jack Neo?

[edit]

Jack Neo did not direct Money No Enough; he merely wrote the script. Money No Enough was directed by Tay Teck Lock. According to articles by TIME magazine and FilmsAsia, That One No Enough was Jack Neo's directorial debut (I may write an article on it one day). The 10 films listed here are considered "Jack Neo films" because he wrote the scripts, not because he directed and acted in most (but not all) of them. What should we change "Films directed by Jack Neo" to? --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 09:33, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why not just call the template "Jack Neo", and break off another line for his screenplays? — WiseKwai 10:34, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What non-screenplays would we mention? The TV shows he cross-dressed in? Articles on those TV shows are unlikely to survive AFD. It looks like Huaiwei changed "Jack Neo films" to "Films directed by Jack Neo", unaware that Jack Neo did not direct Money No Enough. --J.L.W.S. "Jack Neo films" or "Films by Jack Neo" is sufficiently broad enough then. No need to get into TV shows in the template. They aren't notable enough, though maybe they are worth a mention in Jack Neo's biography. Crossing-dressing is a rich comedic tradition. — WiseKwai 11:00, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will change it to "Films by Jack Neo". --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 11:11, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization

[edit]

I understand the appeal of using this template as a tool for categorizing the articles it appears in, but care must be exercised in this scheme. For example, Jack Neo now appears in the Comedy films and Singaporean films categories. I have edited a lot of navigation templates, and this is one of the first ones I've seen that uses this method. Manually inputting the categories on each article yields more exacting and controllable results. — WiseKwai 10:01, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All 10 Jack Neo films are Singaporean films and comedies. It is highly unlikely that he will script a non-Singaporean or non-comedy film. To be honest, when I added the categories to the template, I thought doing so was common practice and had no idea that I had stumbled upon an "innovative" way to integrate templates and categories. I know hardly anything about the policies and guidelines regarding use of templates and categories. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 10:45, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that all the categories are added to whatever article the template appears in, so under the scheme, Jack Neo is now categorized as a Singaporean film and a Comedy film. I am unsure if there is solution that provides for exceptions. Also, there are no policies or guidelines on this, because, as you say, you've been innovative, and for that reason, this problem hasn't ever been dealt with. — WiseKwai 21:03, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
