Burton Dassett

[edit]

Burton Dassett railway station ... as shown on the line template

The railway station may well have been situated in this named location, but it never carried a railway station name as such. When it opened, it was called Burton Dassett Platform, then some time later, it was renamed Burton Dassett Halt.

If you follow the Burton Dassett link you are taken to Burton Dassett railway station, which explains all that. You altered that to Burton Dassett Halt, which is a redlink - you broke a perfectly good working link. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:41, 2 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You say it is a perfectly good working link and I say it is most certainly not, as there has never been a station just called Burton Dassett.
Why on earth therefore does Wikipedia have the heading over the station article information box as that of Burton Dassett Halt? Is there one set of logic for Wikipedia station articles and another logic for Wikipedia station article information box sections in such station articles? If you chose to disallow my entry of Burton Dassett Halt on the line template, why did you also not amend the heading of the article information box section to Burton Dassett to match the name of the article.
Is it not the case that Wikipedia have stated that the name of stations shown on line templates is the last name carried by a station, when there have been earlier names?

It's a perfectly good working link because on clicking that link, it takes you to the page about the relevant station: if you then read the text of the page that is so reached, it is clearly about the station that at different times has been named Burton Dassett Platform and Burton Dassett Halt. Your preferred link does nothing of the kind - it goes to an empty edit window headed "Creating Burton Dassett Halt railway station". If you feel that the article Burton Dassett railway station is misnamed, the procedure is described at WP:MOVE. If you want to discuss it first, you may do so at Talk:Burton Dassett railway station, but not here. If the article presently named Burton Dassett railway station gets moved to another title, we may then amend the link in Template:SMJ Railway - but not before: the article names should drive the links in line templates, not the other way around. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:39, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for this full and frank clarification of matters, as I must confess that I did think that my understanding of Wikipedia only using the last-known station name of stations may have been a long-held misunderstanding that I had been labouring under.
Your point is taken on all other associated matters and it would be nice to see the title of the Wikipedia railway station article itself in question being amended to show an actual station that once existed, rather than the generic geographical area name in which it was so situate.

The guideline that you are thinking of is WP:NCUKSTATIONS. My point is not that the article that is presently named Burton Dassett railway station should stay where it is - my point is that we should not alter links in a way that causes them to fail, whether or not such a change would pre-empt a rename that has not, as yet, occurred. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 16:45, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
