Creation

[edit]

For the record, this template was based on what I did with MortalKombatProject. Nice, simple, and encourages people to either help maintain the article or join the project. EVula 15:22, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Any idea how we can fix how this operates on a page like Talk:*** (check it out to see what I mean). Would adding a well placed nowiki element do it? (John User:Jwy talk) 21:05, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. -- JHunterJ (talk) 11:21, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. Check the anchor rendering in on the TALK page. (John User:Jwy talk) 21:23, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that (this) template. Silly me. Fixed too. -- JHunterJ (talk) 22:30, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I thought I had tried that (the page-title thing) before adding my "Nope" comment above. Must have typoed as it didn't preview right. Thx for that. this. (John User:Jwy talk) 23:17, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Class rating

[edit]

This template currently includes an optional "class-rating". Is this being used anywhere, or can we remove it (there will never be a stub-rated or a Featured Disambig page...) to stop any confusion?

See also, the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Disambiguation#Tagging of Project Banner at Talk pages. Thanks. -- Quiddity (talk) 19:14, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

editprotected The text “the project page” in this template should be made a link to Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation. I can't make the change for this template is full protected (why?). Some admin please make it. – b_jonas 20:31, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Echoing the above request, can an admin alter the text for the MAIN_TEXT parameter? There is currently no link to the relevant project, and the text mislabels disambiguation pages as articles. I prefer the previous wording for MAIN_TEXT:

This page is part of WikiProject Disambiguation, an attempt to structure and organize all disambiguation pages on Wikipedia. If you wish to help, you can [SERVER{{localurl:{PAGENAME}|action=edit}} edit the page] attached to this talk page, or visit the project page, where you can join the project and/or contribute to the discussion.

Wording

[edit]

Isn't

"... an attempt to structure and organize all ..."

a little downbeat, even if the untagged backlog were known to be growing? How about -- since WP is always WiP --

"... an ongoing effort ..."

?--Jerzyt 06:00, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pointless?

[edit]

What is the purpose of this tag? All disambiguation pages have various disambig templates already and are in Category:Disambiguation pages --Apoc2400 (talk) 18:49, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Error

[edit]

editprotected In this template, when it is used on a template's talk page (see Template talk:Disambig), when it says to edit the attached page, it links to an article (i.e. it doesn't including the Template: namespace at the beginning of the link). Class= (again)

[edit]

One good reason for using the "|class=" parameter is to set it to "|class=Dab". Without this, the utility to display an assessment of an article's quality as part of the page header for each article cannot recognise dab pages . (The utility can be enabled by going to my preferences and selecting the Gadget tab). Can we have "|class=" back, please -Arb. (talk) 19:57, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The class parameter would be completely redundant in this banner, and I can't support adding it just to benefit an unrelated gadget. What you really need is a change in the behavior of the gadget itself. The gadget already recognises SIA (see Khoro (rural locality)); what it needs is a change to make it recognise Disambig. That's something you should take up with whoever created or maintains the gadget, though. PC78 (talk) 00:38, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You could always hard-code |class=Disambig in the template. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:18, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, that at least would remove the need for a bot run to add the parameter to pages using this banner. But as I see it, the problem here lies with the gadget, so a solution should ideally be found there. PC78 (talk) 12:25, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The gadget already recognizes disambig, so I don't see what the problem is here. Gary King (talk) 16:00, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It would definitely be redundant. Disambiguation pages actually work best for the script as they are now: Since it can identify a page from the disambiguation template alone, there's no need to waste resources requesting and parsing the talk page in those cases; likewise for set index articles, redirects, and articles with no talk page. (The HTTP request for the talk page accounts for most of the time the script takes to run.) If it doesn't seem to be recognizing a particular disambiguation page, it's either a bug or a browser issue. Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 16:15, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell the gadget isn't working properly. At Atlas (disambiguation) (for example) I'm getting "An unassessed article from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". That's with both Firefox 3.5 and IE7, so I'm still inclined to think that there's something wrong with the gadget. PC78 (talk) 22:43, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It works fine for me at that page. Firefox 3.5, with the monobook.js version of the script. Gary King (talk) 22:47, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean you have the script enabled in your /monobook.js page rather than in "my preferences"? Perhaps that would explain why I'm having this problem and you're not, but I don't know enough about scripts to say. PC78 (talk) 23:08, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This edit needs to be copied over to the gadget version for disambiguation pages to be detected correctly. Gary King (talk) 23:13, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion withdrawn: It is clearly the wrong way to deal with what turns out to be a long standing bug in the gadget. -Arb. (talk) 12:17, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup Parameter

[edit]

Hi all, what thoughts do you have about adding a cleanup parameter to this project banner? "Cleanup=yes", for example, would add the page to Category:Disambiguation pages needing cleanup, as well as display some sort of message box, under the banner, such as this one:

Let me know what you think. Cheers, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 13:19, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We already have the disambig vs disambig-cleanup pair of templates, for that. Duplicating it here would be confusing/redundant. -- Quiddity (talk) 19:15, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I was unaware of disambig-cleanup. Still, might it be a replacement for disambig-cleanup? It unclutters the disambiguation page, while gives more function to this template. Also, it seems like Category:Disambiguation pages in need of cleanup is currently underused. It would be similar to WikiProject Biography's "attention" parameter. Your thoughts? Arbitrarily0 (talk) 21:32, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
disambig-cleanup is widely used by this project's participants, and Category:Disambiguation pages in need of cleanup is actively patrolled - It varies in size from 30 entries to 200 entries, in any given month. It's had a backlog tag added and removed a few times this year [1].
Your idea/intent was good, but we already have a workflow that encompasses cleanup, with the existing templates. :)
Perhaps instead, we should make the line at Template:Disambig/doc that mentions the existing cleanup template, more noticeable? Or anywhere else you might have looked-but-not-found the existing template? -- Quiddity (talk) 00:49, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would be better to add a parameter to the existing banner rather than have a new template, i.e. which would produce:

WikiProject iconDisambiguation
WikiProject iconThis article is within the scope of WikiProject Disambiguation, an attempt to structure and organize all disambiguation pages on Wikipedia. If you wish to help, you can edit the page attached to this talk page, or visit the project page, where you can join the project or contribute to the discussion.

But I agree that such a feature would be redundant to the existing disambig-cleanup template. I don't really see the point in either duplicating or replacing it. PC78 (talk) 22:43, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 07 August 2011

[edit]

There is a version in the sandbox that would add the main cat for the tagged talk pgs of the project, and remove the unneeded "key" for the category parameter. The reason I'm requesting the main cat option is to be able to compare the pgs in Category:All disambiguation pages with the talk pgs in Category:WikiProject Disambiguation pages. Thanks, --Funandtrvl (talk) 17:53, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Would be useful to add the 'needs-attention' parameter

[edit]

I was hoping to add 'needs-attention=yes' to new dab page (I created) Thiên. It would be a rarely used parameter, but could be useful in circumstances like this one ... I've like no familiarity with Vietnamese personal name syntax. Regards --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 03:00, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps Thiên should be merged into Thien, as the only difference in those titles is diacritics? wbm1058 (talk) 20:25, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 16 August 2018

[edit]

Right now, adding this template to Talk pages is failing to "assessment classify" the related articles as "Disambig" pages – is there a way to fix this, so this template starts correctly "assessing" articles as "Disambig" pages?... Thanks. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:52, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

IJBall, I'm not sure what change to make to the template. Can you link me to an article where this incorrect behavior is happening? (Please reactivate the request once you've added one.) Enterprisey (talk!) 01:43, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Enterprisey: Take a look at my articles created page – the following pages are all "unknown" classification, rather than "Disambig", even though this template is at their Talk pages: Going Straight (disambiguation), Ardhangini, Matthew Underwood, A Wrinkle in Time (disambiguation). Contrast that with Burke's Law and Holding the Baby which are correctly "classified" as Disambig. pages by the WikiProject Television banner template. --IJBall (contribstalk) 01:51, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
IJBall, what do you mean by you are seeing "unknown" classification - where are you seeing this on the page? Galobtter (pingó mió) 17:06, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't appear on the page, but in the various lists and reports that classify articles by status (stub, Start, C, FA, etc.). It seems to come down to the fact that the banner templates of other projects can detect a dab page and hence have it classify as "Disambig", while the banner template of the Disambig project itself apparently doesn't classify articles at all, and hence pages tagged by it appear in the various reports as "Unknown". – Uanfala (talk) 17:10, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks, misread IJBall's comment, the unknown is on xtools. I don't think this is solvable by editing the template, I think it'd require a change to Xtools, which I think is checking/parsing the page to find out if it is a disambiguation page by looking for "class = disambig" per the source code.. Galobtter (pingó mió) 17:23, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Galobtter: Is there an Xtools talk page/request page, then? Thanks! P.S. Also, are we sure there's no way to add some sort of "class = disambig" parameter to this template?... --IJBall (contribstalk) 17:26, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I realized now that xtools uses mw:Extension:PageAssessments as to get the page assessments so this should be fixable here, will fix soon Galobtter (pingó mió) 17:41, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
IJBall,  Done. It'll take a really long time for this to propagate though (it requires a null edit to the talk page update things), but xtools should start showing those as disambiguation pages soon Galobtter (pingó mió) 18:20, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Galobtter: Awesome! Thanks a bunch! --IJBall (contribstalk) 18:22, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please change <span class="plainlinks">[{{fullurl:{SUBJECTPAGENAME}|action=edit}} edit the page]</span> to Special:EditPage/SUBJECTPAGENAME. 54nd60x (talk) 04:03, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: Why do this? We usually show these with plainlinks. Elli (talk | contribs) 04:47, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Elli: What about edit the page? The plain link show is no longer working for me and it's always better to use a special page instead, see Template_talk:No_article_text/Archive_1#Protected_edit_request_on_14_July_2020. 54nd60x (talk) 12:38, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@54nd60x: I see your point, I still think the link should be surrounded with a plainlinks class. If you don't object to that I can make the change. Elli (talk | contribs) 12:41, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Elli: What I meant was that even with the plainlinks class, it no longer works with external links. I think that it's still better to use Special:EditPage. 54nd60x (talk) 12:47, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@54nd60x: I'm not objecting to the use of Special:EditPage here. Elli (talk | contribs) 12:57, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Elli: So what do you think would be a better solution? 54nd60x (talk) 12:59, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@54nd60x: I'm not saying "we shouldn't use Special:EditPage", I'm wondering if you'd also like the plainlinks class removed, and if so, why? Elli (talk | contribs) 13:00, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Elli: Yes, I do want plainlinks class removed, because it isn't showing plain links and is still showing external links when used here. 54nd60x (talk) 13:02, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
BTW I use Timeless skin, for which it used to work but no longer works. 54nd60x (talk) 13:03, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@54nd60x: this is an issue with the Timeless skin then, I would assume, and removing the plainlinks class from every link on the wiki is not a good solution... just get the skin fixed. Elli (talk | contribs) 13:03, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Elli: Ok. I will find a way to request to fix the skin then. 54nd60x (talk) 13:05, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Something which needs fixing?

[edit]

If no one has yet noticed, there are many instances of "Category:Disambig-Class (WikiProject) articles" where the class assessment for the WP has suddenly changed from Category-Class to Disambig-Class. Since none of the cats I spot-checked have been edited in years, I can only assume this occurred due to changes made to this template and its usage on those category talk pages. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 06:48, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It may be related to a new feature on class mask which is designed to automatically detect disambiguation pages. Perhaps it is incorrectly identifying these pages because of the Disambig in the name. I'll look into it. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:35, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
