New "Canon" template

Whoever made this is simply uninformed, because Millennium has nothing to do with the "canon" of The X-Files, it is not even set in the same universe aside from one or two crossovers. The Lone Gunmen is also not exactly "canon" for The X-Files, although it's a spinoff that involves the same characters and had a general sort of continuity.

Visibility

This box is very hard to read. The title bar is great, and main part is just about okay, but some of the rest is terrible. Blue on blue-grey is not a good choice! Loganberry (Talk) 22:23, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Absolutely. The layout is fine, but the colour-scheme is anything but. For example, the link to "Official Website" is almost exactly the same colour as the background! Loganberry (Talk) 02:04, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

"Strange Luck" under "Related"

Someone continues on their quest to add Strange Luck to every X-Files related page, going so far as to add it to this template. I have never seen the show and I'm sure it's great and underrated and should never have been canceled, but from all accounts it only referenced ONE character (Mulder) from The X-Files ONCE, in its final episode (after it had already been canceled). Mulder didn't appear, he was only mentioned by a character in passing. Personally I think this is surely an homage to another sci-fi show the producers of Strange Luck loved, and that had the luck NOT to be canceled and was continuing on the same network, rather than any claim that the shows were ALWAYS designed to be part of the same universe, or else the connections would have come up earlier since they both deal with the paranormal subject.

I know other people may interpret it differently, but besides, there are other shows that HAVE referenced The X-Files many times (Buffy the Vampire Slayer for instance), and this alone does not make them part of the same "universe" or "canon" (stupid fanboy term if I ever heard one). There are other shows- Homicide, Picket Fences- which actually did have semi-crossover episodes with side characters or storylines. If you look at the "pop culture" section of The X-Files article you'll see Strange Luck was not at all unique in referencing it- it was a popular show after all, and for a while everyone wanted to namedrop the characters. You can't assume every reference in a TV show is intended to be a reference to something that is REALITY within that universe, a lot of it is a playful postmodern thing calling attention to the artificiality of TV itself. Ever seen X-Files episodes like "Bad Blood", "Jose Chung's from Outer Space" or "Post Modern Prometheus"? Just because the opening shot of the Jose Chung's episode appears to be a Star Wars spaceship does not mean The X-Files is set in the same fictional universe as Star Wars.

You can argue over whether we should be linking to the other Ten Thirteen shows in the template, which amounts to cross promotion for a single company and creator (when for instance, Morgan and Wong also had their own shows, which are ghettoized into their own template, and various other X-Files producers and writers also had their own different shows, again as covered in The X-Files article under Legacy). But Strange Luck didn't even share writers or producers with The X-Files (you may be thinking of Howard Gordon's Strange World).

As for "Related", yes, Harsh Realm for instance can only be justified in the template because it was also produced by Ten Thirteen and Carter (although Gillian Anderson did voiceovers on it). But even Millennium, which also is not set in the same universe as X-Files, has much more direct connection, with several references, an episode featuring an X-Files character, and an entire Millennium crossover episode of The X-Files. The Simpsons also has a crossover episode- and I don't see it in the template. I don't think it should be there, either- but Strange Luck should definitely not be there. The template is supposed to link to articles of direct relevance to The X-Files subject, not all TV shows with the same themes or quality (or even producers and actors) that X-Files fans might like. If Ten Thirteen was a larger company with many shows (like David E Kelley or something), we probably wouldn't link to their shows from here, but since Carter was only involved in a few shows besides TXF, and his involvement e.g. in Millennium at the same time, had direct effect on the behind the scenes production of The X-Files... they do seem directly relevant. 172.144.187.160 05:29, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Mythology Collections

Hey everyone. I think the Mythology collections are a great resource if people only want to follow the main story but I haven't seen a page that links to them yet so I added them under the episode list. I'm not a very avid wiki-editor so I just put it in the place that I thought would make the most sense.

Have re-jiggered it about a bit, but yeah the volumes could be worth keeping in the template. I'm going to be expanding them a good bit soon, too, so that'll help motivate me too. GRAPPLE X 11:18, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
