the artist's strong command of line and dynamism to the modern eye appears merely a triumph of skill and color. but consider, 1835 is several decades before the daguerrotype or early modern camera. how could the artist have captured such detail of line, form, function, musculature, and the behavior of horses under stress without the aid of a mechanical contrivance. the artist clearly benefited from early training, natural talent, and a commitment/ethos to the work of the painter/artist. moreover, she did not without an education from the School of Fine Arts, which was closed at the time to women.
