Elagabalus was named emperor by the rebellious Roman army in Syria and Macrinus was defeated at the Battle of Antioch. The Romans were very displeased with the extravagent behaviour of the new emperor and after 4 years of rule his cousin Alexander Severus was hailed as emperor in 222. Elagabalus and his mother were both killed.
