From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gallienus, son of emperor Valerian kicked the Franks out of the Roman Empire in 258. His father had reconquered Syria in 257 from the Persians and was fighting them along the Euphrates. While Gallienus and Valerian were occupied, military commander Ingenuus in Pannonia revolted and declared himself emperor. This could also have happened in 260, because the sources on this period are flimsy. If so, than Gallienus rushed eastwards and defeated the usurper. The Scythians had free play in the meanwhile, devasting several provinces with their invasions across the Danube and the Black Sea. Valerian moved his army from Syria to Cappadocia to confront the Scythians, but was unsuccessful. The Scythians returned home with their booty with little Roman resistance.

In 259, the Scythians crossed the Danube again, commanded by the Goths. The Alamanni invaded the Agri Decumates and the Franks invaded across the Rhine in either 259 or 258.
