Carrabelle Beach (fka McKissack Beach), located 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of the business district of Carrabelle, Florida, is a public beach.

History

Carrabelle Beach opened July 4, 1930.^[1] It's name eventually changed to McKissack Beach, the namesake of its developer and promoter, William Crawford McKissack (1878–1958), a pharmacist who – with his wife, Mae Pickett (maiden; 1879–1925) – moved from Shorterville, Alabama, to Carrabelle in 1903, and, for more than 50 years, operated a drugstore there. McKissack had purchased about 3,000 acres in the Carrabelle area.^[2] McKissack bought the entire ridge across from what became known as McKissack Beach and sold the lots to his extended family. In the 1940's the area was taken over by the US Army as a training ground for Amphibious Landing Training for Camp Gordon Johnston. After the army left Franklin County, Carrabelle Beach returned to popularity with locals and visitors who enjoyed restaurants, a dance hall and motels in the area.^[3]
