William Alfred Grenfell Jr. (March 18, 1925 – October 27, 1995) was an American politician who served in the Oregon State Senate from 1959 to 1963 and in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1955 to 1959 as a Democrat. In 1962, he ran for a seat on the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners. During this campaign, Grenfell was involved in a car accident that killed a man. Initially claiming it to be a kidnapping plot, Grenfell eventually admitted to his role in the crash, having driven the car, which belonged to a woman who was not his wife. Grenfell subsequently lost the support of the Democratic Party and lost the November election. Afterward, Grenfell ran unsuccessfully for office over the decades following the accident. Grenfell died on October 27, 1995.
Early life
[edit]Grenfell was born March 18, 1925 to William Alfred Grenfell and Lillian Marie Grenfell.[1] William Sr. was a fire chief for the Portland Fire Department,[2] and Lillian ran for a state house seat in 1960.[3]
Political career
[edit]On January 9, 1962, Grenfell announced his intention to run for a seat on the Multnomah County Commission.[4]
